Phelim McDermott
Phelim McDermott and his theatre company, Improbable, were in residence at Metal in West Hampstead, London in 2003 for a period of three weeks.
Phelim used this time to investigate an embryonic idea for a new kind of theatre experience that would combine the skills of the stage with those employed throughout the world in conflict resolution and ‘World Work’.
Three weeks of intense exploration with fifteen actors skilled in improvisation technique were complemented by organized dinners and debates with invited artists from different disciplines, those in conflict and those who work to resolve conflict.
The culmination of the residency was a work-in-progress performance at St James’s Church in West Hampstead with 50 invited guests who fully participated in the continued development and debate around the idea.
Since Phelim’s residency with Metal, he has developed his ideas and methodologies further to create the Improbable show, Devoted and Disgruntled – a place where the theatre and performing community gather in Open Space and work on what could be improved; the things that they are passionate about and the things they wish were different.
