ImagiNation workshops across Essex Libraries, summer holidays 2014
Looking for things to do with kids this summer?
Metal are delighted to be working in partnership with Essex Libraries on the ImagiNation project. We will be running 16 really fun, creative workshops at Grays, Corringham, Westcliff and Basildon Libraries.
The workshops are aimed at ages 10 – 16 and are linked to the Libraries summer reading challenge for younger readers.
There are four to choose from. Or come to all four!
It’s all FREE – just turn up on the day. Places are limited, so its advisable to turn up early to avoid disappointment.
Choice of workshops:
‘Create Your Own Universe’ – led by published author, Syd Moore
Over the course of 3 hours come and build as yet unimagined, characters from nothing – create the details and fabric of their lives, give them personality and history, develop their greatest fear, dearest wish and darkest secret. Introduce your character to the world and then create and send them into the biggest drama of their lives!
This workshop will help you develop vocabulary, get a sense of how to build a believable character, and construct dramatic plotlines.
‘Novel Graphics’ – led by visual artist, Simon Monk
Using a favourite book or poem as a starting point, we will be exploring a range of ways in which text can be adapted into a visual format. We will be focussing on exploring fictional worlds, extending characters and events, and mashing up genres and characters.
The world of comics and graphic novels will serve as the basis and inspiration for the young people’s work which could result in a range of outcomes from small comic booklets to large scale visual narrative.
‘Rip it up and Start Again’ – Emma Edmondson
Starting with mass media imagery and text, we will be exploring the ways in which meaning can be reversed and remade by physically cutting up and re-combining elements from all sorts of printed matter, such as books, magazines and the like.
There is scope for loads of experimentation here and exciting, unexpected results including collage and 3D outcomes.
‘Camera, Lights, Action’ – Sara Grundy
Looking at books and their film adaptations, we will be exploring the area of production design and inventing new outfits and looks for selected characters. Participants will be able to use their unique interpretations of the original texts to develop their responses in the form of innovative design work. An initial session of paper based design development will result in the making of a wearable headpiece using professional techniques. The defining feature of many movie costumes is the headpiece and participants will be exploring this design area in its many forms, whether it be a hat, a helmet, a wig, a mask or even an adventurous head based sculpture inspired by the source material.

These workshops are part of ImagiNation, a reading and creative arts summer challenge created by Libraries, young people and artists in ten authorities in the East of England and supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
Everyone aged 10-16 can join the challenge from 12th July. Visit your library and collect your free ImagiNation Log, read books of your choice and share your creative ideas. See what other young people have been creating at www.imaginationeast.org.uk.
