SUMMARY:Resetting Your Creativity Rhythm with Jeffrey Choy
DESCRIPTION:Clocks went forward on 29th March\, and we “lost” an hour. What if we used this seasonal shift to find a different kind of time? \nIn this edition of Get A Room\, artist and writer Jeffrey Choy invites you to a low-pressure social setting centred around the ups and downs of the creative process. This session specifically looks at the down cycles of creativity\, the essential periods of absorbing others’ arts\, daydreaming\, being playful and resting\, activities that are often treated as “unproductive”. This Get A Room is a curated space for collective rhythm with no expected outcome. Whether you’re in a high-energy creative phase or a quiet burnout phase\, you’re welcome to bring your “unfinished business” into the room. \nWhat to bring:\n– (optional) Your Work: A laptop to write\, a sketchbook to doodle\, knitting\, or a project you’ve been stuck on.\n– (optional) Your Inspiration: A book you’re currently devouring\, a handheld game you’re playing\, or a clip/reel that’s haunting your thoughts\n– (mandatory) Yourself: Just as you are\, whether you’re feeling high-battery or low-power. \nWhen: Thursday 14 May\, 5-7pm \nWhere: at RB7 Art Centre CIC\, Queensgate\, Long Causeway\, Peterborough PE1 1NT \nBook a free space here. \nAbout Jeffrey Choy\nJeffrey Choy is an artist and writer investigating the mechanics of cultural production\, with a focus on decolonial narrative\, through his practices of writing\, visual and spatial design\, documentation\, publication\, and interactive media. His practice examines the designer as scribe for commercial culture\, questioning how visual communication lends authoritative power to political and economic entities. Jeffrey works against this complicity\, interrogating how propaganda and class disparity become naturalised within culture. \nAfter a decade in visual communication and branding\, and having trained and worked in the fields of interior design and architecture\, Jeffrey’s creative trajectory shifted dramatically following the political upheaval in his hometown of Hong Kong. This rupture led him to rethink the role of media\, language\, and visual communication under conditions of state control. Across print\, digital media\, and physical spaces\, he explores how narratives are shaped\, censored\, and reclaimed. His publications work as both artistic objects and platforms for critical discourse\, often extending into participatory formats that treat play as a deliberate counter to late-capitalist crises and the ideology of infinite growth. \nHe is the co-founder and lead visual of Hidden Keileon CIC\, an artist-led collective working with migrant and queer communities to imagine futures through non-hierarchical collaboration and multidisciplinary\, life-affirming cultural projects. His artistic practice is shaped by collective authorship\, radical friendships\, and a politics of publishing grounded in the commons\, designing as a shared practice of survival and reimagination\, open to the curious and the critical alike.

SUMMARY:Creative Peer Meet-Up with Olga Jurgenson & Idit Nathan
DESCRIPTION:Feeling stuck working on your own? Missing creative conversation\, shared thinking\, or simply being in a room (even a virtual one) with people who get it? \nJoin artists Olga Jurgenson and Idit Nathan for a relaxed and welcoming peer mentoring introductory session as part of Get a Room – space for creatives to come together\, spark new ideas\, and collaborate. Book a free place. \nOlga and Idit have both been part of a long-standing peer mentoring group and know first-hand how valuable it can be to have a space for reflection\, support\, accountability\, and creative exchange. This session is an invitation to come together with other artists and creatives\, meet like-minded people\, and explore what a peer-led support group could look like. \nWhether you’re looking for connection\, fresh perspective\, encouragement\, or just a space to think out loud with others\, this session is for you. \nTogether\, Olga and Idit will introduce some of the guiding principles of peer mentoring and help create a space for open conversation\, curiosity\, and creative solidarity. The hope is that this will support the formation of a new group that can continue meeting independently in the future. \nAn additional follow-up session will also be shaped around the needs of the group. \nThis session is free to attend. To book your space\, fill in the form here. \nAbout Get a Room\nGet a Room is all about making space for connection\, conversation\, and creative collaboration. It’s for artists and creative folks who want to think out loud together\, share early ideas\, and build something meaningful with others. These are the kinds of spaces that are often missing in our cities and across the country: spaces where people can come together to share\, reflect\, and explore ideas in a supportive\, private setting. This initiative supports the formation and development of artist- and creative-led groups built on kinship\, curiosity\, and solidarity. Groups where people can come together to talk about what’s on their minds\, swap experiences\, and maybe even dream up something new. \nAbout the artists \nIdit Nathan\nIdit is a Cambridge based conceptual artist\, her work includes interactive installations\, live events\, games\, audio visual works\, walks and artists’ books where play operates as a productively provocative space to challenge accepted understandings. Using optics\, scale and perspective participants respond to contemporary dilemmas both as actors with free will and actors in an historical and cultural context. Her artworks have been been exhibited internationally and are held in private and public collections. Idit has taught\, lectured and mentored privately and at art schools across the UK and until 2020 was associate lecturer at Central St. Martin’s College (University of the Arts London)\, where she completed an arts practice PhD titled Art of Play in Zones of Conflict – the Case of Israel Palestine in 2018. \nOlga Jürgenson\nBorn in Siberia\, raised in Estonia\, currently based in the UK\, Olga Jürgenson works and exhibits internationally. Her inherited familial nomadism\, combined with an inquisitive mind filtered through a feminist lens\, has led her to explore humanity’s search for utopian Paradise. Whether collaborating with the world’s first AI love doll Samantha\, researching television detective stories while questioning the role of God\, or painting portraits of robots disguised as celebrities\, Olga is drawn to the complexity of human nature. Her current work involves communicating with the spirits of her ancestors\, rummaging through their archives as they gladly share with her their Earthly experiences in carpentry\, crocheting and surviving bloodthirsty dictators. Olga has also participated in significant group exhibitions globally.

SUMMARY:Art Locker Workshop at Gladstone Connect: Disrupting Loneliness in Peterborough
DESCRIPTION:A forgotten locker has been given a new purpose. Now it travels across Peterborough. As it travels\, it needs filling with artwork. \nJoin artist Rose Croft for the launch of The Art Locker. Each locker will have a piece of artwork that can be taken and added to\, asking what happens when we open spaces that are usually closed and private and invite people to share instead of keeping things to themselves. \nThe Art Lockers have been created to disrupt loneliness through small creative acts of exchange. \nDuring the session you’ll hear about the project\, explore the lockers and help fill them as they do their six-week residency across three community venues this spring. \nFor the Art Lockers you could:   \n– Learn how to fold an origami style Victorian love letter\n– Write a note of encouragement\n– Make a small artwork or object\n– Or bring something of your own to add  \nEvery contribution becomes part of the journey. \nAbout Rose Croft\nRose is a socially engaged artist\, storyteller and creative producer\, dedicated to creating safe\, accessible spaces that foster connection through art\, story\, and nature. Their practice is rooted in the belief that creative experiences can inspire joy\, strengthen personal and community resilience\, and deepen cultural connection. \nRose regularly works with arts organisations\, charities\, community groups\, schools and festivals. They are one half of the not-for-profit arts organisation Art Pop-Up and the founder of the producer-led collective Angry Pencil. Rose has shared stories and delivered workshops both locally and internationally for over 14 years. \nAbout Artist Ideas to Disrupt Loneliness\nIn Autumn 2025\, artists submitted their creative project ideas as part of The Unlonely City. Since then\, and even before then\, we’ve been thinking about how we can create unlonely cities through creativity\, curiosity and just the right amount of chaos. You can find out more about what’s happening in Peterborough here.  \nThe Unlonely City is an arts programme disrupting loneliness\, nurturing moments of solidarity\, surprise and laughter. Through a series of artistic commissions\, citizens assemblies\, parties and public conversations\, The Unlonely City takes place across Liverpool\, Peterborough\, and Southend\, where Metal is based\, to imagine what an ‘unlonely’ city could be. \nThe Unlonely City programme is funded by Paul Hamlyn Foundation as part of the Arts Award.

SUMMARY:Dream Space: Help Create Peterborough's Pop-Up Reading Room
DESCRIPTION:Join Ruth Beale and Amy Feneck from the Alternative School of Economics\, as they dream up something new — a modular\, mobile Reading Room for Peterborough — and they invite you to be part of it.   \nTogether we’ll reimagine what a reading room could be – a structure that can hold books and be a space for meaningful conversations. We need your help to make it welcoming\, inviting\, and something you’d like to use!   \nDuring the workshop we’ll use screen printing and block printing techniques to transform recycled fabric into material for Metal’s new Reading Room structure\, as well as imagery inspired by Peterborough\, its histories\, stories and community spaces.  \nNo experience necessary\, just curiosity and a willingness to experiment!  \nAbout Dream Space  \nThis workshop is part of our Dream Space\, which will breathe new life into an empty shop unit in the corner of Queensgate\, transforming it into a vibrant community hub for reading\, reflection\, and creative exchange in the heart of Peterborough.  At the centre of Dream Space is our Pop-Up Reading Room – a place where ideas are cooked up\, books are shared\, and conversations spark. This is one event of a packed programme of events and workshops and the opportunity to co-design a new pop-up reading room structure to live on beyond the project.  \nYou can find out more about Dream Space here.   \nAbout The Alternative School of Economics   \nThe Alternative School of Economics is a collaboration between artists Ruth Beale and Amy Feneck that questions dominant economic systems through collective self-education. Working with communities\, they explore global political issues in relation to lived experience and use feminist and alternative economics as forms of resistance. A selection of books from their projects Rabbits Road Institute Library (2016-) and The Neoliberal Imagination (2023) can be found on the shelves.   \nAbout ReCollective   \nReCollective are a diverse group of designers\, environmental activists\, makers and mavericks who work together to create systemic changes around attitudes towards ‘waste’ materials. They divert material away from waste streams\, often from creative industries like film and theatre\, and embedding it into buildings and structures for communities.  \nImage credit: The Alternative School of Economics & At the Library

SUMMARY:Dream Space: We're all from somewhere... with Soraya Smithson and Kate Genever
DESCRIPTION:Join artists Soraya and Kate on 13 November to explore what’s in a name?   \nSouvenirs and surnames overlap. Both things we keep\, and both relate to specific times and places. Souvenirs come from close and faraway places. Names do too.   \nSoraya and Kate invite you to join us over a collection of souvenirs as we start to think about what journeys our families and their names have been on to meet us here in Peterborough in 2025.   \nDo you\, like Kate\, have a Dutch surname that’s arrival in the area is long lost? Or perhaps yours is Italian and relates to the city’s brick history? Maybe you are Ukrainian or Somalian or Scottish and your name speaks of a more recent arrival? Maybe you don’t know but are intrigued to find out more.  \nAs part of the session Kate and Soraya will invite you into a creative activity that generates future souvenirs. New objects that record our presence here in this time and space.  \nThis event is part of Metal’s Dream Space\, which will breathe new life into an empty shop unit in the corner of Queensgate\, transforming it into a vibrant hub for reading\, reflection\, dreaming for the future and creative exchange in the heart of Peterborough.  At the centre of Dream Space is our Pop-Up Reading Room – a place where ideas are cooked up\, books are shared\, and conversations spark. Alongside this\, we’re offering a packed programme of events and workshops and the opportunity to co-design a new pop-up reading room structure to live on beyond the project. SUMMARY:Dream Space: Imagine a Reading Room workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Ruth Beale and Amy Feneck from the Alternative School of Economics\, as they imagine and design a new modular\, mobile Reading Room for Peterborough – and invite you to be part of it.  \nWe’ll think about how we make a space to be together\, what a Reading Room could be\, and how we can care for it. During the workshop we’ll use drawing\, look at images and motifs\, and collectively design the mobile Reading Room structure. We need your ideas on how to make it welcoming\, inviting\, and something you’d like to use!  \nThis workshop is part of our Dream Space\, which breathes new life into an empty shop unit in the corner of Queensgate\, transforming it into a vibrant community hub for reading\, reflection\, and creative exchange in the heart of Peterborough.  At the centre of Dream Space is our Pop-Up Reading Room – a place where ideas are cooked up\, books are shared\, and conversations spark. This is one event of a packed programme of events and workshops.  \nYou can find out more about Dream Space here.   \n  \nAbout The Alternative School of Economics   \nThe Alternative School of Economics is a collaboration between artists Ruth Beale and Amy Feneck that questions dominant economic systems through collective self-education. Working with communities\, they explore global political issues in relation to lived experience and use feminist and alternative economics as forms of resistance. A selection of books from their projects Rabbits Road Institute Library (2016-) and The Neoliberal Imagination (2023) can be found on the shelves.   \n  \nAbout ReCollective   \nReCollective are a diverse group of designers\, environmental activists\, makers and mavericks who work together to create systemic changes around attitudes towards ‘waste’ materials. SUMMARY:Invited by Metal: Reverie - a dream of autoimmunity by Joanna Holland
DESCRIPTION:Sunday 2 November\, 7pm   \nPeterborough Museum and Gallery   \nTickets £7.50  / free for people who identify as living with chronic illness\, Disabled\, D/deaf and/or neurodiverse    \nAges 14+  \n  \nInvited by Metal\, multidisciplinary artist Joanna Holland brings her performance Reverie – a dream of autoimmunity to Peterborough.   \n  \nA once grand hall in an abandoned manor house – now in a dilapidated state of disrepair. A young woman\, a dreamy new friendship\, and a curse. An unorthodox relationship\, but one which has utterly lifted her from a state of melancholia.  \n  \nSuddenly this friendship takes a sinister turn\, and she finds herself in a nightmarish scenario – where comfort is replaced by claustrophobia and trust by terror.   \n  \nRule one – never ever share your innermost secrets.  \n  \nRule two – old houses are not to be trusted.   \n  \nEntanglements between chronic illness and a repetitive dream inspired Joanna’s auto-fictional tale of love\, loss and unpredictability. Reverie is performed as a dreamlike monologue by award-winning actress Louise Kim Salter. Directed by Stéphanie Joalland.  \n  \nThe performance will be followed by a Q&A with writer Joanna and actress Louise.   \n  \nPresented by METAL Peterborough\, funded by Arts Council\, England.  \n  \nThis performance is part of The Haunted. Running over the course of a year\, The Haunted is a collection of performances\, talks\, readings\, and soundscapes which explore liminal space\, dreaming\, sick bodies\, horror\, and the uncanny. Female-led narratives by Disabled and non-Disabled artists share what it’s like to exist in an ever-shifting\, ‘in between’ space.   \n  \nContent information: Reverie – a dream of autoimmunity features themes of horror\, chronic illness\, parasomnias\, nightmares\, visions\, pain and death. It has an unnerving and extremely loud soundtrack\, with some sudden noises\, moments of darkness and flashing lights.   \n  \nTickets are £7.50 or free for people who identify as living with chronic illness\, Disabled\, D/deaf or neurodiverse  \n  \nBook your ticket here: https://peterboroughmuseum.org.uk/events/reverie \n  \nFind out more about the project at https://www.hollandsyntax.uk/   \n  \nImage Credit: Louise Kim Salter in Reverie © Chloe Page

SUMMARY:Where We Are... Peterborough Taster Session - Pockets of Protection with Rose Croft
DESCRIPTION:What or who makes you feel safe in Peterborough? How do you show others that they’re safe with you?   \nJoin artist Rose Croft for a drop-in workshop for folks aged 16 – 19\, to create your own pocket of protection; a stitched or printed handkerchief or small fabric pouch that holds something important to you. Using a mix of fabric painting\, stitching\, or printing\, add secret pockets or coded symbols\, that might symbolise protection\, queer or divergent identities\, show your identity loudly and proudly\, or quietly let someone know they are not alone.  \nProtective marks have long been carved into buildings and charms sewn into clothing to protection. Locally there are various buildings with secret markings or sigils to ward off evil and many an offering has been found in fens waters.    \nQueer people and others who’ve felt unsafe being open have also long used colours\, gestures or coded objects to signal who they are to those who would understand; eg. green carnations and lavender handkerchiefs or ways of speaking or dressing that signal alternative subcultures.  \nThis session will invite reflection on how we create safety for others or show who we really are when we don’t always feel safe to be fully seen.  \nThis taster workshop is part of Where We Are… Peterborough a UK wide youth-led project with the British Museum. SUMMARY:Citizen Leadership and Marketing with New Art Exchange
DESCRIPTION:In this interactive session\, New Art Exchange (NAE) will share their citizen-led approach to cultural programming—placing community voice at the heart of decision-making. Through case studies and discussion\, the session will explore how citizen led models can shape more inclusive\, resonant and far-reaching activity. Participants will consider how citizen leadership can inform not only programme content but also build authentic\, organic marketing and deeper audience connection.  \nAbout New Art Exchange:  \nNew Art Exchange (NAE) is the UK’s largest gallery dedicated to contemporary visual arts from the Global Ethnic Majority. We set out to reshape the contemporary art narrative by championing diversity and inclusivity and by providing a platform for underrepresented voices in the art world. Our focus on co-design and collaboration means we nurture citizen leadership by allowing local voices to guide how we do things. We are the first cultural institution in the world to establish a permanent citizen assembly as a key part of our leadership. This is how we ensure continuous community representation and involvement—demonstrating the power of culture when it’s built with\, not just for\, communities.  \nAbout the Large-Scale Event Network  \nTogether with the Peterborough Cultural Alliance\, Metal is hosting a Large-Scale Event and Festivals Network\, bringing together groups\, individuals\, organisations and the people who work hard behind the scenes\, from in and around Peterborough. This new network will be led by those involved and exists to help support the wealth of brilliant large-scale events happening across the city\, creating a space for inspiration\, sharing knowledge and expertise\, troubleshooting and collaboration.  \nTo find out more about the Large-Scale Event Network click here.
