SUMMARY:Where We Are... Taster Session: Mini Museums with Fi Cifaldi
DESCRIPTION:Come and create your own tiny “museum exhibits” that explore identity\, storytelling\, myths and legends of the city\, or perhaps a vision of Peterborough’s future.    \nWorking with Fi Cifaldi\, folks will decorate and display objects (real or symbolic)\, which can be made through air dry clay\, drawing\, painting\, mixed media\, collage and with various other crafting supplies or found objects.   \nIn groups\, we will make little plaques for our ‘artefacts’ which will include information about where the objects may have been found\, who the artist is\, a story of how the object came into being\, where in Peterborough it’ll be displayed next etc. Over the course of the day\, we will display our mini museums for people to explore and learn from what one another have shared.     \nThis taster workshop is part of Where We Are… Peterborough a UK wide youth-led project with the British Museum. This is a chance to find out about the project\, and how to get involved in creating something together that is special and powerful for the city and your community.  \nSnacks included!   \nWho is this session for?  \nThis session is aimed at young people aged 16 – 19 year olds\, particularly those who identify as LGBTQ+ and / or disabled and / or neurodivergent.  \nAccess  \nThe RBI Centre is based in Queensgate shopping centre\, opposite where the old John Lewis store use to be based. SUMMARY:Where We Are... Peterborough Taster Session - Pockets of Protection with Rose Croft
DESCRIPTION:What or who makes you feel safe in Peterborough? How do you show others that they’re safe with you?   \nJoin artist Rose Croft for a drop-in workshop for folks aged 16 – 19\, to create your own pocket of protection; a stitched or printed handkerchief or small fabric pouch that holds something important to you. Using a mix of fabric painting\, stitching\, or printing\, add secret pockets or coded symbols\, that might symbolise protection\, queer or divergent identities\, show your identity loudly and proudly\, or quietly let someone know they are not alone.  \nProtective marks have long been carved into buildings and charms sewn into clothing to protection. Locally there are various buildings with secret markings or sigils to ward off evil and many an offering has been found in fens waters.    \nQueer people and others who’ve felt unsafe being open have also long used colours\, gestures or coded objects to signal who they are to those who would understand; eg. green carnations and lavender handkerchiefs or ways of speaking or dressing that signal alternative subcultures.  \nThis session will invite reflection on how we create safety for others or show who we really are when we don’t always feel safe to be fully seen. Tickets are free. \nBook here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/pockets-of-protection-with-rose-croft-tickets-1372491130919?aff=oddtdtcreator  \n  \nAccess  \nThe Musuem has step free entrance along with an allocated disabled parking space. SUMMARY:Citizen Leadership and Marketing with New Art Exchange
DESCRIPTION:In this interactive session\, New Art Exchange (NAE) will share their citizen-led approach to cultural programming—placing community voice at the heart of decision-making. Through case studies and discussion\, the session will explore how citizen led models can shape more inclusive\, resonant and far-reaching activity. Participants will consider how citizen leadership can inform not only programme content but also build authentic\, organic marketing and deeper audience connection.  \nAbout New Art Exchange:  \nNew Art Exchange (NAE) is the UK’s largest gallery dedicated to contemporary visual arts from the Global Ethnic Majority. We set out to reshape the contemporary art narrative by championing diversity and inclusivity and by providing a platform for underrepresented voices in the art world. Our focus on co-design and collaboration means we nurture citizen leadership by allowing local voices to guide how we do things. We are the first cultural institution in the world to establish a permanent citizen assembly as a key part of our leadership. This is how we ensure continuous community representation and involvement—demonstrating the power of culture when it’s built with\, not just for\, communities.  \nAbout the Large-Scale Event Network  \nTogether with the Peterborough Cultural Alliance\, Metal is hosting a Large-Scale Event and Festivals Network\, bringing together groups\, individuals\, organisations and the people who work hard behind the scenes\, from in and around Peterborough. This new network will be led by those involved and exists to help support the wealth of brilliant large-scale events happening across the city\, creating a space for inspiration\, sharing knowledge and expertise\, troubleshooting and collaboration.  \nTo find out more about the Large-Scale Event Network click here.

SUMMARY:Hosted at Metal Liverpool: KRAus plus Lick (AMQH/whi music)
DESCRIPTION:Hosted at Metal’s Platform 1 building\, this monthly concert series has built up steam over the past year and a half using the Engine Room in Edge Hill station as its base. Put together by Phil Hargreaves (whi music) and Nick Branton – variously of the Liverpool Gathering Orchestra and myriad other local musical projects – their umbrella for these events is titled ‘AMQH’ and has become an improvised music headquarters; one prong on the city’s vibrant experimental music scene crown. Expect free hot drinks and largely unamplified spontaneous composition. \nOn Friday 17 January\, “two local (ish) trios\, including voice\, sax\, guitars\, clay flutes\, found sounds\, ‘just about music’ and deep listening at all times” will perform. \nKRAus\nRob Harrison – guitar\, Keith Parkins – reeds\, Angela Vowles – voice.\n“An eclectic mix of jazz-flavoured instruments\, boasting avenues of nuances derived from the moment. The presence. Re-imagining the unity of discord\, and mayhem\, they insinuate the possibilities of anti-normalness.\nThis improvisational trio\, Keith Parkins\, Robert Harrison\, and Angela Vowles make music ( most of the time) but don’t know where it’s going. Nor do they know when it will end .\nThey create their own space and time . Draw inspiration from Kraus …” \nLICK\n“are Aous\, Jon and Paula\, using everyday found sounds for ‘just about’ music\, sometimes singing\, sometimes clay flutes. They insist they’re in a band together…” \nDoors open at 7.30pm\, music starts at 8pm. \nTickets are £7\, and £5 concessions \nAdvance tickets for AMQH / whi music events are available here. \nPlease note: This event is ‘hosted at’ Metal Liverpool and as such functions outside of Metal’s core programme. SUMMARY:Hosted at Metal Liverpool: John Zorn's Cobra (Liverpool Gathering Orchestra)
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by AMQH (whi music) at Metal’s Platform 1 building\, the Liverpool Gathering Orchestra will perform John Zorn’s infamous game piece Cobra at the close of its 40th anniversary year – and on Winter Solstice. The fun part? This piece of music can be extremely long or really quite short…rock up and find out which way this still-novel composition goes. Whatever the direction\, it’s bound to be play-full. \nFrom AMQH: \n“John Zorn wrote Cobra in 1984. It is a game piece\, involving cards\, gestures and headgear to direct and shape improvisations\, providing a framework for the music without inhibiting the players. Hopefully. \nThe LGO are ten of the finest local improvising musicians tackling Zorn’s rarely-performed piece. We didn’t have the budget to get Zorn himself over\, but do come and hear his composition.” \nThis will be the last event at Metal Liverpool for the rest of this year – on the shortest day\, no less – come to experience live musical spontaneity in all its unfettered\, humourous\, and raw glory. \nDoors 7.30pm\, music starts at 8pm. \nTickets are £7\, and £5 concessions \nAdvance tickets for AMQH / whi music events are available here. \nPlease note: This event is ‘hosted at’ Metal Liverpool and as such functions outside of Metal’s core programme. SUMMARY:Hosted at Metal Liverpool: The Signalman
DESCRIPTION:Hosted at Metal Liverpool\, The Signalman is a ghost story by Charles Dickens performed by John Maguire and Zoran Blackie\, and directed by David Griffiths. \nAfter a spectacular sold-out run last year\, ArtsGroupie return to Edge Hill station with a production of the haunting Victorian play perfectly suited to the surroundings: The Signalman. Archetypal theatre in a typically theatrical setting! Enter\, as always\, via Platform 1… \nThere will be 2 performances across two nights: \n\nThursday 5 December\, 7pm\nFriday 6 December\, 7pm – Sold Out\n\nTickets are available from the organisers here. \n \nFrom the Producers of Kitty: Queen of the Washhouse and A Portrait of William Roscoe comes a slice of winter terror with a new adaptation of the much-loved Charles Dickens supernatural classic\, The Signalman.\n“As solitary a place as ever I saw…It struck a chill to me\, as if I had left the natural world.” A ghostly figure has visited the signalman twice already\, each time preceding a terrible disaster. When the apparition appears for the third time\, it’s up to the signalman to decode its meaning and prevent another catastrophe. A gripping slice of gothic horror from Charles Dickens\, regarded as the greatest horror story ever written. \nIn the tradition of classic oral storytelling\, a lantern and two players is all that is needed to tell the spine tingling tale of the Signalman. \n“The Signalman is a powerful and haunting story about survivor’s guilt and isolation – something we believe will be of striking relevance to our audience following the pandemic. Our inability to control events around us can be more frightening than any ghost\, as Dickens knew well. He wrote from experience\, a survivor of the Staplehurst railway disaster – events that both inspired and haunted the author.” – David Griffiths\, Writer and Director \n“Last year\, I worked with David on a critically acclaimed production of Orwell’s 1984 and Artsgroupie produced the successful Ghost Stories For Xmas. We are delighted to be once again collaborating on a much loved classic\, playing some new locations and re-visiting some of our favourite local venues.” – John Maguire\, Creative Director ArtsGroupie \nPlease note: This event is ‘hosted at’ Metal Liverpool and as such functions outside of Metal’s core programme as a dry hire. As Disco Neurotico’s resident DJ\, Byron Vincent has ignited dancefloors across the UK’s top venues and festivals. Expect riffs you recognise in remixes you don’t. Local artist Fiona Cifaldi has created a gorgeous blackboard mural so you can share your favourite moments from Chauffeurs history and what a future art space in Peterborough should look like. \nThe when and the where? \n\nDate: Saturday 30 November\nTime: 7pm – 10pm\nLocation: Chauffeurs Cottage\, St Peters Road\, Peterborough PE1 1YX\nDress code: Sparkle if you like\, or just keep it casual\n\nCome along and raise a glass to the end of an era and help us go Out With a Bang! RSVP here so we can get the party hats ready. \nIn the build-up to the party\, check out the rest of the events in our What’s Possible When Things Go Wrong programme here. \nWhat’s Possible When Things Go Wrong\nMetal and the other organisations based at Chauffeurs Cottage will be leaving in December. It wasn’t our decision and it’s one we’re still trying to get our heads around\, but we’re working hard to find a new space in the city that will be just as wonderful\, whilst celebrating all the magical moments we’ve spent here. \nBeing thrown into this situation has made us reflect on ‘necessity as a mother of invention’ – being faced with a challenging situation and being inspired to create a new imaginative solution. It’s made us dream about inspiring futures and what a queer\, accessible\, anti-racist space would look like from scratch.

SUMMARY:Food Gatherings: Who Owns The Land? With Emma Edmondson and Shaun C Badham
DESCRIPTION:Artists Emma Edmondson and Shaun C Badham are coming to Chauffeurs for an evening of activity exploring the theme of land ownership\, agency and what’s possible when things go wrong. The event will include talks around artists’ agency\, protest postcard writing\, hearty root vegetable stew and a quiz titled Who Owns the Land? Prizes included. \nThis session is part of What’s Possible When Things Go Wrong\, a series of celebrations\, sharings\, and dinners to mark our final moments in the building and to explore what is possible when the sh*t hits the fan. \nBook your free tickets here. \nAbout Emma Edmondson\nStudying and graduating during the 2008 financial crash alternative economies and utopian community are at the centre of Emma Edmondson’s practice. Through sculpture\, print\, sound and text\, she explores the power of people coming together through creative projects to change systems and rules. Recently she has been processing raw clay dug from the ground and exploring local land rights to create sculptures that sit on the ground they were made from. Through this she wants to start conversations about agency\, land ownership and our connections as humans to the land we live on. \nIn 2016 she set up TOMA an accessible artist-run education model which is currently the only postgrad-ish level art programme in Essex after all others were stopped by their host universities. TOMA sits outside the traditional institutional model and was born of and been shaped by austerity and the decades long businessification and dismantling of creative education. This\, alongside the rise of tuition fees\, means it is difficult for artists to flourish unless they become part of the financialised art world. These are the politics that bought TOMA into existence. \nAbout Shaun C Badham\nShaun produces installations and objects that draw out our relationship to exterior spaces and structures from the urban to the edgelands. These projects offer a use value\, with how the works are occupied\, determined or engaged with. The operative element plays out durationally\, whether that’s changing policy on how a local council regenerate play spaces or how a city grants permission for a touring public sculpture. \nShaun has instigated long-term collaborative projects that are realised across different mediums\, from local community actions to large-scale sculptural installations. Notable projects include\, I’M STAYING (2014 to 2021)\, MORNING (2014 to 2018) and PLOT (2018 to 2024)\, MARKING THE LAND (2022 to present) and EDGELANDS (2022 to present). Shaun is a co-director of Bas-Arts-Index. SUMMARY:Food Gatherings: The Body Remembers with Kate Marsh
DESCRIPTION:Join artist-researcher Kate Marsh for a practical session exploring what the body remembers\, what we want to leave behind\, and what we want to take forward. During the night\, you’ll have access to all the nooks and crannies of the building\, to dance\, rest\, and explore. We’ll use improvisation and play to discover what’s possible when we have permission to fail. \nThis will be followed by a quick sharing over nibbles and refreshments. No prior experience needed. We’ll all arrive from our own place and pace\, privileging all experiences and ways of being in a playful\, accessible and generative environment. \nThis session is part of What’s Possible When Things Go Wrong\, a series of celebrations\, sharings\, and dinners to mark our final moments in the building and to explore what is possible when the sh*t hits the fan. \nBook your free tickets here. \nAbout Kate Marsh\nKate Marsh is a disabled / crip artist researcher. Assistant professor at C-Dare (centre for dance research at Coventry University). Kate’s practice – research is focused on nurturing spaces for everyone to develop and realise their ideas and practice. She is interested in re-imaging leadership in the arts in a way that truly makes access for everyone.

SUMMARY:For One Night Only: The Gleaners and I (2000) with Cine Sister
DESCRIPTION:For one night only\, join Cine-Sister for a film screening of The Gleaners and I by Agnès Varda at Chauffeurs Cottage\, as part of our What’s Possible When Things Go Wrong programme. A series of celebrations\, sharings\, and dinners to mark our final moments in the building and to explore what is possible when the sh*t hits the fan. \nThe Gleaners and I (2000) is a poetic and deeply personal documentary that explores themes of waste\, resourcefulness\, and the overlooked lives of those who make use of society’s excess. Directed by French filmmaker Agnès Varda\, the film blends observational footage with intimate\, reflective narration as Varda sets out to document the practice of “gleaning” — the age-old act of collecting leftover crops from fields after harvest — and expands this concept to urban settings\, where people salvage food\, objects\, and materials discarded by others. The gleaners’ resourcefulness and resilience highlight how circumstances\, especially scarcity or social need\, drive creativity and new approaches to survival. The Gleaners and I is a portrait of people and a filmmaker embracing necessity as a catalyst for invention and creativity. \nBook your free tickets here. \nAbout Cine-Sister\nFounded in 2016 by Emily Steele\, Cine-Sister launched with its first screening in March 2017. Cine-Sister has since 2017 run 50+ successful events\, reaching 6000+ audiences. Cine-Sister was initially founded to showcase the work of women filmmakers and has taken a pop-up approach across Peterborough focusing on working in partnership with local organisations and community groups.
