Book an hour-long slot\, with a panel of the Metal team and our associate writers\, to discuss your writing practice\, talk through ideas\, find signposting to references and opportunities or simply get feedback on your works in progress. \nWe’re offering these sessions in person at Chalkwell Hall\, as well as the option to discuss your work with us online. SUMMARY:What Becomes... An exhibition by Xavier de Sousa
DESCRIPTION:Metal is supporting artist Xavier de Sousa for their multidisciplinary exhibition What Becomes… The exhibition explores the processes of adaptation that migrants go through when moving to a new place and to a new community. \n“When you move somewhere\, is the onus on you to adapt or others? And what becomes of us\, over time\, over all these changing landscapes?”  \nCreated in collaboration with members of the Peterborough community\, Xavier explains that the project “looks into how we change (in our souls\, in our behaviour\, in our language\, in our bodies) as a result of co-existing in a new place\, in a new culture.” \nBlending pottery work\, performance\, writing and sound art\, What Becomes… invites the audience to immerse themselves\, experience and also contribute their stories of adaptation. \nWhat Becomes… is Xavier de Sousa’s first exhibition and continues the collaboration with the communities of migrants and asylum seekers based in Peterborough and Leeds\, which started during their performance project REGNANT (2021). This new artwork advances the collective-narrative approaches of that project and re-purposes all the clay work created for it\, giving them new lives\, in new contexts. \nThe exhibition will be hosted at unit 26 in Westgate Arcade\, running from 6 June until 29 June\, and is viewable during the following times: \n– Thursday: 3pm – 8pm\n– Friday: 2:30pm – 5:30pm\n– Saturday: 2:30pm – 5:30pm \nCredits: \n– Created by Xavier de Sousa\n– Sound work by Nicol Parkinson\n– With participation by Judita Gru\, Madhu Manipatruni\, Roshannak and Siamak Rezaei\, and other members of the local migrant communities and people seeking asylum of Leeds and Peterborough\n– Produced by Lee Smith with support from The Uncultured\n– Commissioned and hosted by METAL Peterborough\, with support from East Street Arts\n– Supported by Necessity Fund and using public funding by Arts Council England\n– Exhibition hosts: Fiona Cifaldi\, Jasmine Kelly-Gobuiwang\, Sean Dendere \nAccess:  \n– Westgate Arcade has step free access and is all on one level. SUMMARY:Peteborough: Arts Council Project Grant Open Advice Sessions for Global Majority artists with Yvonne Hercules
DESCRIPTION:Metal is working with Arts Council England (ACE) to host a series of talks and open advice sessions about how artists\, creatives\, community and voluntary groups can apply for a Project Grant to fund their work. ACE are keen for more people from the Peterborough and Fenland area to apply. \nOn Friday 7 June\, we’re offering free sessions for global majority* artists who live and/or work within our local area (Peterborough\, Cambridgeshire\, and surrounding villages). This session will be supported by local artist Yvonne Hercules along with a member of the Metal team. These sessions will have an Arts Council project Grant focus\, but will be led by you and what you’d like to discuss\, which might include: \n– Talking through a project idea\n– Deciding which Arts Council funding stream is right for you\n– Budget development or reading draft applications\n– Discussing your creative practice\n– Building relationships with different organisations\, voluntary groups\, partners or venues to support an application \nAbout Yvonne Hercules\nYvonne Hercules is a singer-songwriter/artist & performer based in Cambridge UK. Her music has received nods from publications including Clash Magazine\, The Line of Best Fit\, Afropunk\, and others and she has received support from PRS Foundation\, Arts Council England towards her work. Inspired by Folk\, Blues\, Rock & Soul\, her songs are a culmination of these genres underpinned by honest\, thought-provoking lyrics. She also draws on inspiration from visual mediums outside of music including art & film\, with visual concepts often coinciding alongside her songs. \nHow to book\nWe’re offering these sessions in person at Chauffeurs Cottage\, as well as the option to discuss your work with us online. Blood and Belonging is the title of Louise’s guest edition of writing magazine Writers Mosaic.  \nRaine\, Richard and Damian will speak about the importance of their GRT ancestry to explore questions such as “How does a blood lineage give you a sense of belonging?” “Is there such thing as a GRT community when so much of it is so diverse?”\nJoin this discussion and celebration of what we have in common. \n  \nAbout Richard\nRichard O’Neill is a storyteller\, author\, playwright\, animation scriptwriter and workshop leader based in the North of England. He conducts nomadic storytelling training sessions across Europe and co-founded Diverse Book Week to champion inclusivity and amplify diverse voices.\nHis upbringing in a traditional nomadic Romani family deeply influences his work\, inspiring him to leverage the power of storytelling in various formats to promote inclusion and acceptance.\nAwards include the ‘National Literacy Hero’ award for his impact on promoting literacy and diversity in literature\, the Beacon Leadership Award for community development and inclusion\, and a Royal Society of Literature Award. \nAbout Raine\nRaine Geoghegan (she/her) is a prize winning multi-disciplinary artist with an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Chichester. Born in the Welsh Valleys\, she is of Romany\, Welsh and Irish ethnicity. Her poems and prose have been published with Under the Radar\, Romany Routes Journal\, Poetry Ireland Review\, The Clearing\, Travellers’ Times and were featured in the documentary film\, Stories from the Hop Yards.\nRaine’s first pamphlet Apple Water: Povel Panni (2018) was chosen as a 2019 Spring Selection by the Poetry Book Society. Her second and third pamphlets are also published with Hedgehog Press. Her first full collection The Talking Stick: O Pookering Kosh (2022) was published by Salmon Poetry Press. She currently gives readings in the UK and Ireland and Australia. \nAbout Damian\nDamian Le Bas is a writer from the south coast of England. His first book The Stopping Places: a Journey through Gypsy Britain (2018) won the Somerset Maugham award\, a Royal Society of Literature Jerwood award\, and was shortlisted for the Stanford Dolman Travel Book of the Year. The sounds presented on their last record ENHANCER evoke a strange warmth\, shimmering and stretching with the intuition of acoustic improvisation. \nLola De La Mata is a composer\, sound artist and curator based between Liverpool and London. Her recent album Oceans on Azimuth was released to much acclaim\, reflecting on years of research and embodied experience on tinnitus and the architecture of our ears. Leroy “Horsemouth” Wallace and Richard “Dirty Harry” Hall recruit a “Robin-Hood” band of friends to get even with some oppressive mafia types. \nWhat began as a documentary about the reggae scene in the 1970s and turned into a feature length film\, Rockers is a great lightning in a bottle film with a stellar cast of iconic Jamaican musicians. Not only is it a fantastic film with an amazing soundtrack but it also encapsulates this era of music in an extraordinary way. To celebrate Jamaican Independence Day\, Black Girl Watching Film Club presents a screening of this film on Thursday 8 August with a post-screening discussion. Join us for the launch of the Planting and Placemaking mapping booklet\, plus an open discussion about railways\, placemaking and gardening. Zhuozhang will also be joined by Andrea Ku\, current PICTON PLAY artist and founder of B4Biodiversity. Book free tickets here. Following on from the workshop we held in May\, the Planting and Placemaking project explored the variety of community-based railway gardens along the Liverpool-Manchester line through two workshops at Edge Hill and Irlam station. Zhuozhang collected everyday perspectives on communities working together to create moments of gathering\, gardening\, and collective decision making on how natural spaces are used by the community.  The soon-to-be-launched Planting and Placemaking booklet features reflections from our Director\, Jenny Porter\, Marwa Al Khalidi (Lecturer\, University of Kent) and findings from the workshops held earlier this year on Health & Wellbeing\, Natural Resilience\, Biodiversity and Sustainability.   Free booklets will be available and refreshments will be provided. We’ve got some more coming up! \nWe’re working with Arts Council England (ACE) to host a series of talks and open advice sessions about how artists\, creatives\, community and voluntary groups can apply for a Project Grant to fund their work. ACE are keen for more people from the Peterborough and Fenland area to apply.     The first Open Advice Session is coming up on Wednesday 18 September for d/Deaf\, disabled\, and neurodivergent (DDN)* artists who live and/or work within our local area (Peterborough\, Cambridgeshire\, and surrounding villages). This session will be supported by local artist Kate Marsh along with a member of the Metal team. These sessions will have an Arts Council project Grant focus\, but will be led by you and what you’d like to discuss. \nBook your free place here. \nAbout Kate Marsh:\nKate Marsh is a disabled / crip artist researcher. Assistant professor at C-Dare (centre for dance research at Coventry University). Kate’s practice – research is focused on nurturing spaces for disabled and crip artists to develop and realise their ideas and practice. She is interested in re-imaging leadership in the arts in a way that truly makes access for everyone. \nHow to book: \nWe’re offering these sessions in person at ‘The Hangout’\, inside Queensgate shopping centre. These sessions are being held in response to research and findings from ACE (Arts Council England) which show a lower number of funding applications made by people existing within these underrepresented groups. \n*What do we mean by d/Deaf\, disabled\, or neurodivergent (DDN)?   \n\nd/Deaf: writing d/Deaf in this way acknowledges that some people are born Deaf\, and other people develop deafness later in life.\nDisabled: a term that is used to describe anyone who has a physical condition or illness that impacts the way they live their life. \nNeurodivergent: is an umbrella term used to describe people whose brains work differently. Neurodivergent can be used to describe all kinds of disabilities that affect how people think or develop\, including autism\, dyslexia\, dyspraxia\, ADHD and more.  \n\nOur definitions of these terms have been helped by research carried out by Peterborough Presents via their Reasonable Adjustment project\, you can read more about here.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at Metal Liverpool on Friday 20 September from 6-9pm for a discussion with writer\, artist and researcher Adèle Oliver. With food provided by Raggas\, plus music and conversation. \nAdèle will talk through some of the key points of her book Deeping It: Colonialism\, Culture and Criminalisation of UK Drill\, tracing the aesthetic\, musical\, and liberatory legacies behind the force that is drill. Expect readings\, music and movement in this exploration of Black artistic resistance\, expression\, and suppression. \nAbout Adèle Oliver \nAdèle Oliver is a writer\, artist and scholar from Birmingham. Her book Deeping It: Colonialism\, Culture and Criminalisation of UK Drill counters panic-fuelled discourse on UK drill\, gang violence\, and knife crime\, ‘deeping’ drill as a complex Black artform\, born out of generations of commentary on and resistance to technologies of colonialism\, consumerism\, anti-Blackness\, and more. Adèle is also a core member of Art Not Evidence and works as an expert witness in cases that use Black youth culture\, music\, and idiomatic language as evidence of bad character\, criminality and/or gang affiliation. Outside of this work\, Adèle is a musician\, producer\, and avid capoeirista. \nThe ticket price (£5) includes a portion of Raggas curry\, rice and peas. DESCRIPTION:Hosted at Metal Liverpool on Saturday 21 September\, Eternal Triangle is: Trevor Watts (saxophones)\, Veryan Weston (keyboards)\, and Jamie Harris (percussion). Trevor Watts is one of the first wave of British improvisers\, having been at the forefront of the UK improvised music scene since its emergence in the 1960s. Piano virtuoso Veryan Weston played in Trevor’s Moire Music\, as well as collaborating with a wide range of notable artists.
