SUMMARY:Long Table Discussion: Cost of Living Crisis with Dora Colquhoun
DESCRIPTION:Join Liverpool based theatre maker and artist Dora Colquhoun for a participatory event discussing the cost of living crisis. The conversation will be organised in the long table format\, created by performance artist Lois Weaver\, which aims to make sure everyone who joins is able to be heard and can participate when they want to. \nWhat will happen? \nA simple format of a table 12 chairs and the subject of the cost of living will be up for discussion. The aim of the format is to enable discussion where no one is the ‘expert’ it is a non hierarchical space. Everyone in the room has the power to shift the direction of conversation\, to mediate moments of tension and to make space for voices less easily heard. \nIf the idea of participating in this event terrifies you do not worry\, you can be a ‘spectator’ and witness the discussion sitting outside the main table. There will be an opportunity to join in if you feel inclined. The event will be audio recorded. \nThe event is supported by ourselves and Project Phakama. \nSchedule \n12pm: Soup\, refreshments and spoken word. Please come along prior for free soup. \n1pm: Long table discussion about the cost-of-living crisis 90 minutes. \n2.30: Refreshments cake debrief and music \n4pm: End \nVenue \nUllet Road Unitarian Church \n57 Ullet Rd\, \nLiverpool \nL17 2AA \nAccessibility \nStep free access to the Unitarian Church is available\, please inform us in advance if you require a member of staff to meet you once you enter the grounds. There is also an accessible toilet. \nThe event will have a BSL interpretor. \nWe will also facilitate a quiet space. \nBook free tickets here.

SUMMARY:Who inspires you and why?
DESCRIPTION:Come along and celebrate inspiring women this International Women’s Day through tufting art workshops with punch needling and Rag Rugging. \nWhen? \n\nSaturday 4 March at Town Hall on Bridge Street 12-3pm (Free\, Drop-in) \n\nTogether with artist Rose Croft\, we are running a tufting workshop with punch needle and Rag Rugging art at the International Women’s Day Celebration’s at Peterborough Town Hall (4 March)\, exploring the theme of influential women\, and the reasons why they inspire you! \nPunch needle art is a form of embroidery suitable for all skill levels\, using a large needle like tool to punch loops of yarn through fabric. It is a fast process which allows you to make mistakes and experiment with different designs and textures. Rag Rugging is a craft where people use recycled fabrics and clothes to create rugs. By prodding and poking strips of fabric through linen.   \nArtist Rose Croft will be teaching you the basics of both these techniques whilst making your own punch needle design to work with and contribute to a collective piece of tufted art. Rose will guide you through the process\, of selecting the right materials\, practicing the technique\, working with colours\, creating a design\, and then making a piece of art that you can be proud of.  \nDuring the session we will be having a chat about who inspires you and why\, these discussions will help inform designs inspired by those women and conversations\, whilst also feeding into a larger collaborative piece of textile art!  \n \nAbout Rose Croft Rose is an artist and storyteller and based in Spalding and Peterborough. Rose works to engage people with art\, story and nature in ways that forge lifelong connections. Through her creative work Rose aims to capture and share the simple joy within us\, brought out by the world we live in by using colour and focusing on the process of making and doing.

SUMMARY:Artist Sharing: Charlie Barlow
DESCRIPTION:Come join local artist Charlie Barlow on Wednesday 15 February from 5pm\, for her sharing and discussion of new work\, ‘Now and Yesterday’.   \nCharlie has created textile works using materials of the mass media – everyday newspapers and digital phone notifications. She’s been exploring ways in which constant flows of information are presented\, experienced and absorbed by the mind. The works range from large double sheet spreads to a hand-held scale\, and each piece is weaved by hand into patterns as once clear imagery becomes distorted in complex layers.  \nThis is a work in progress sharing and\, Charlie is keen to gain feedback from those who attend as to develop the work further. \nBook here.

SUMMARY:Future Station: Rest (Is A Political Act)
DESCRIPTION:For our next Future Station event we are pleased to welcome artist Niki Colclough to host a workshop to explore the value of rest\, linking to our wider theme of Care in the Arts. \nRest (Is A Political Act) is a workshop in a series created by Niki Colclough. Join us to speculate on new strategies for re-framing and re-prioritising rest in a society orientated towards productivity.  \nIn an act of collective care we will explore alternative understandings of and approaches to work\, reframe laziness as a creative tool and contemplate societal/political structures of wellbeing.  \nNiki will share her research in progress alongside a bespoke tool designed to introduce the 7 types of rest\, together we will consider the types of rest we might need before dreaming up joint strategies for implementation.  \nThe event is designed for those working precariously in the creative industries who would like to work towards more joy and sustainability in their working practices. This is a relaxed and interactive session where contributions and thoughts on the topic are welcomed.  \nBook your free tickets here.

SUMMARY:Future Network: Learn how to print with a Risograph Printer
DESCRIPTION:As a part of our Future Network program\, we are excited to host a Risograph Printing workshop with artist Amanda Rigby. This workshop will be an opportunity for artists and creatives to learn new techniques and make connections with other creatives across the city.  \nA Risograph printer looks like a standard photocopier\, however\, it works like a screenprinter. It uses vibrant colours and stencilling to create DIY style prints\, often used for posters and zines. Risograph printers are traditionally used for high-volume printing\, but over the years artists have also used them to create unique artworks! \nAmanda will deliver a 3-hour Risograph workshop\, where you will learn how to use the Risograph printer by developing your own print designs. This could be your own artwork\, a poster or the beginnings of a zine. With the support of Amanda\, participants will learn what the Risograph printer is\, how to use it and different printing techniques. Participants will develop their own artworks via mark making\, collage\, pattern making\, placement and design.  \nDuring the workshop attendees will work together and make their own pieces.  \nPeople at all skill levels are welcome. Some small lunch snacks and refreshments will be provided\, but please feel free to bring your own lunch.  \nIf you have any questions or queries\, then please feel free to get in touch at sarah@metalculture.com or on 01733 893077  \nBook your tickets here. \nAbout Amanda Rigby  \nAmanda Rigby is an artist\, designer and illustrator. She works predominantly in pen and spray paint\, exploring bodies\, creatures\, growth\, emergence and emotional states. Her work touches on the difference between our calm\, desensitised exterior and the world of our inner thoughts. Particularly physical sensations\, blood rushing in response to touch and fleeting thoughts beneath everyday moments.  \nOur Access  \nThe garden and ground floor are all on one level\, with automatic doors to enter the lobby. The doors are wide enough for an electric wheelchair. In the lobby there are a series of doorways.  \nThe doorway on the right leads to the mainspace where the workshop will take place\, which is wide enough for an electric wheelchair. The mainspace has an induction hearing loop that can work by linking up to a set of microphones.  \nAt the back of the mainspace is a doorway that leads to our workshop space\, this is where the risographprinter is\, which can also be accessed through the double doors outside at the far end of the building. A wheelchair ramp is available for use if entering through the outside double doors.  \nBack in the lobby\, the doorway directly ahead of you is to a gender neutral and wheelchair accessible bathroom. The bathroom has handrails and assistance chords. The door on the left leads to the reading room\, which is wide enough for a manual wheelchair.  \nAll our bathrooms are gender neutral. If you have any specific questions or queries access please get in touch.

With the idea of creating music that is truly me rather than what is expected of me as a black woman.”  \n  \nThis is a work in progress sharing\, Karmen is keen to gain feedback ahead of her album release in 2023. The evening will consist of hearing a select few songs from the album\, with time for Q & A. This will be an informal relaxed event\, with refreshments\, come along\, enjoy and listen to the refreshing music of Karmen Idol.   \n  \nAbout Karmen:   \nKarmen Idol is a songwriter and singer based in Peterborough; she started as a BBC Talent New Urban Music Awards semi-finalist to eventually co-write music for the Universal Music Group as well as having a number 1 song in The Up-Front Club Charts. Karmen writes songs from many genres such as Soul\, Garage\, Club\, Bassline and KPO

SUMMARY:IN OTHER WORDS 2: In conversation
DESCRIPTION:Metal in partnership with Fest en Fest presents\, In Other Words 2\, a conversation hosted by artist\, researcher and curator of In Other Words publications\, Kate Marsh. \nFollowing the first edition of In Other Words\, which shared urgent reflections from 49 marginalised artists in 2020\, exploring their hopes and fears for the future at a time of global crisis\, this second edition focuses on the ‘now’. \n“We wanted to acknowledge the position of artists in a period of great change and unknowing. In 2021\, following numerous lockdowns and continued questions about the future of the arts\, we wanted to create a second iteration of In Other Words\, asking ‘How are you now’\, this question was intended to make space for the experiences and perceptions of artists re-building their lives and their practice in unchartered territory.” Kate Marsh \nJoin us for a discussion about the latest collection and the themes of the book.  The book brings together artists from the UK and internationally working across performance\, literature\, poetry and visual arts. Contributors explore isolation\, longing\, gender identity\, racism\, family bonds\, mental health\, and ableism amongst many others. This is a call for change from a group who are rich in wisdom and shared experience. \nRead more about the book and purchase a copy from Metal here: metalculture.bigcartel.com/product/in-other-words-2 \n  \nAbout Kate Marsh  \nKate Marsh is a disabled dance artist with over 20 years of experience in performing\, teaching and making. Her recently completed PhD focuses on leadership in the context of dance and disability. She is currently a research fellow at C-DaRE (Coventry University Centre for Dance Research). \nKate is also co-producer of the Change Maker programme at the UK’s arts organisation “Metal Culture”. Change Maker is a programme funded by Arts Council England\, with the aim of increasing the diversity of senior leadership in art and culture by helping to develop a cohort of leaders who are Black\, minority ethnic and/or disabled by means of a targeted senior leadership training and development programme. \nwww.disabilityartsinternational.org/events/kate-marsh-artist-in-residence/

SUMMARY:METAL MASTERCLASS #18: MINATURE BOTANICAL PORCELAIN SCULPTURE WITH KATHRYN PARSONS
DESCRIPTION:When: Saturday 18th April\n \nTime: 10am-4pm\n \nVenue: Chauffeurs Cottage\, 1 St Peters Road\, Peterborough\, PE1 1YX\n \nCost: £35 (includes materials and firing)\n \nOnly 8 spaces available\n \nTo book click here  \n  \nInspired by garden plants and lichens\, this workshop will show you how to create your own miniature porcelain sculptures. Under the careful guidance of Kathryn Parsons you will use simple hand tools and a variety of techniques to shape\, texture and work the soft porcelain clay. There will be plenty of time explore the material\, enjoy noticing the small details of nature and create your own small collection of miniature porcelain treasures. \nThe workshop will start with a short introduction to Kathryn’s work\, her work in porcelain and how she takes inspiration from the natural environment. \nParticipants are invited to bring in any plant material (small leaves\, flowers or seed heads etc) from gardens etc to inspire their work. There will be opportunity to collect samples from the Chauffeurs Cottage garden as well. \nPlease wear clothing that you don’t mind getting slightly dirty or an apron. All tools are provided. The workshop fee includes the costs of materials and firing. Participants will be able to collect fired items from Chauffeurs Cottage 3 – 4 weeks after the workshop. \nMetal is committed to being as accessible and inclusive as possible so please don’t hesitate to contact us with any queries in advance of your booking or visit. \nAbout Kathryn Parsons \nKathryn is a mixed media artist and visual story teller. She is currently artist in residence with the Langdyke Countryside Trust. She creates intricate\, intimate hand-made sculptures that weave together tales of people\, places and the natural world. \nHand modelled porcelain is currently at the heart of Kathryn’s practice\, often combined with found natural and vintage objects. \nIt is the small details of nature that inspire me. Whether I’m looking at a fragment of lichen-encrusted bark or through a lens at a piece of coral\, natural structures\, textures and forms delight me. As I explore these treasures\, and delve into the history of the places in which they are found\, I find myself wanting to share their stories. Through sculpture I select and combine the elements that most fascinate me. Sometimes new species emerge… new wonders of the natural world that have been waiting to be discovered. \nKathryn has exhibited at The Victoria and Albert Museum\, The National Centre for Craft & Design (solo exhibition) and City Gallery Peterborough\, and as site specific interventions at Burghley House\, John Clare Cottage\, Northampton Museum and Derby Museum. The Herbarium at Derby Museum now includes four tiny porcelain ‘lichen’ specimens. \nFind out more: www.kathrynparsons.co.uk
