DESCRIPTION:15th – 22nd Sept   \nRunning from the 15th – 22nd September Metal will be hosting a week-long series of activities around sustainable fashion\, to learn more\, have discussions and build new skills to proactively move towards a more sustainable future.     \nIn partnership with Shado\, Pluto Press and The Reading Room\, these activities are part of a series of events happening across the UK as part of a wider program ‘An anti-capitalist fashion week’.   \nDrawing inspiration from Tansy E. Hoskins’ book ‘The Anti-Capitalist Book of Fashion’ and coinciding with London Fashion Week. The wider program seeks to uncover the roots of extractivism in the fashion industry and to celebrate the organisations shaping alternatives and building a different future.    \nEvents will include a pop-up Mend and Mend Cafe\, workshops in repurposing clothes and using natural dyes\, as well as profiling sustainable fashion and creative businesses throughout the week.      \nActivities: \nCreate your own Style – Be your own fashion designer  \nThursday 15th\, 10.30am – 12.30pm @Paston Farm Community Centre pe4 7XB  \nThursday 22nd 11am – 1pm @ Gladstone Connect (Allama Iqbal Centre) PE1 2EL  \nFriday 30th @ 9.30 – 11.30am @ PARCA (Peterborough Asylum and Refugee Centre) PE1 3QH  \nWe’ll be running pop up events at a number or Peterborough Community Centres. A great sustainable way to update your wardrobe.   \nHow does it work? Bring a small number of items that you’re happy to exchange. The clothes you bring will be laid out along with everyone else’s\, everyone gets a chance to look around and try on items. Then the swapping starts! So\, the clothes swap is fair and not a scramble the SWISH is organised by the ringing of a bell. SUMMARY:METAL MASTERCLASS #18: MINATURE BOTANICAL PORCELAIN SCULPTURE WITH KATHRYN PARSONS
DESCRIPTION:When: Saturday 18th April\n \nTime: 10am-4pm\n \nVenue: Chauffeurs Cottage\, 1 St Peters Road\, Peterborough\, PE1 1YX\n \nCost: £35 (includes materials and firing)\n \nOnly 8 spaces available\n \nTo book click here  \n  \nInspired by garden plants and lichens\, this workshop will show you how to create your own miniature porcelain sculptures. Under the careful guidance of Kathryn Parsons you will use simple hand tools and a variety of techniques to shape\, texture and work the soft porcelain clay. There will be plenty of time explore the material\, enjoy noticing the small details of nature and create your own small collection of miniature porcelain treasures.  \nThe workshop will start with a short introduction to Kathryn’s work\, her work in porcelain and how she takes inspiration from the natural environment.  \nParticipants are invited to bring in any plant material (small leaves\, flowers or seed heads etc) from gardens etc to inspire their work. There will be opportunity to collect samples from the Chauffeurs Cottage garden as well.  \nPlease wear clothing that you don’t mind getting slightly dirty or an apron. All tools are provided. The workshop fee includes the costs of materials and firing. Participants will be able to collect fired items from Chauffeurs Cottage 3 – 4 weeks after the workshop.  \nMetal is committed to being as accessible and inclusive as possible so please don’t hesitate to contact us with any queries in advance of your booking or visit.  \nAbout Kathryn Parsons  \nKathryn is a mixed media artist and visual story teller. She is currently artist in residence with the Langdyke Countryside Trust. She creates intricate\, intimate hand-made sculptures that weave together tales of people\, places and the natural world.  \nHand modelled porcelain is currently at the heart of Kathryn’s practice\, often combined with found natural and vintage objects.  \nIt is the small details of nature that inspire me. Whether I’m looking at a fragment of lichen-encrusted bark or through a lens at a piece of coral\, natural structures\, textures and forms delight me. As I explore these treasures\, and delve into the history of the places in which they are found\, I find myself wanting to share their stories. Through sculpture I select and combine the elements that most fascinate me. Sometimes new species emerge… new wonders of the natural world that have been waiting to be discovered.  \nKathryn has exhibited at The Victoria and Albert Museum\, The National Centre for Craft & Design (solo exhibition) and City Gallery Peterborough\, and as site specific interventions at Burghley House\, John Clare Cottage\, Northampton Museum and Derby Museum. DESCRIPTION:Join artists\, writers\, creatives and activists for an evening of readings\, music and discussion at Chalkwell Hall on Friday 12th\, 7.30pm – 10pm\, part of Metal’s continued programme of Essex Writers House events: Letters to the Earth. \n​Letters To The Earth is a nationwide response to the climate emergency backed by Royal Court\, Shakespeare’s Globe & National Theatre Wales. \nFor the past few months writers and artists\, school children and members of the British public have been writing letters to the earth about the climate and ecological emergency. Over 1000 letters have been received and are due to be read out on April 12th at venues all over the world  from Zambia to Canada\, from Latvia to New Zealand. DESCRIPTION:For EU DAY OF ARTISTIC CREATIVITY on Wednesday 21 March Metal will be formally re-opening the Edge Hill Station Garden for the growing season with the launch of a new artwork by Dave Evans. \nFollowing a three month residency in the garden Dave will be un-veiling an organic wi-fi mast with the capability of emitting an open access network accessible to garden users and commuters. Developed in collaboration with rail users and garden volunteers this online space will aim to provide an alternative experience to people looking at their phones during the boring commute\, who otherwise would not think of gardening or communicating with each other. It will bring attention to the hidden parts of the internet\, the radio waves\, the rhythms and the physical real world objects the internet needs to function. \nJoin us from 5pm on Wednesday 21 March for an evening of food\, music and the ceremonial unveiling of the totemic wi-fi mast. \n\nPlease note our garden is only accessible via a small number of steps. The artists wanted to imagine what it would be like if people from Peterborough had the chance to take a journey to the moon with someone they loved. This idea echoes the recent search of the Mars Foundation for ‘mature couples’ to travel to Mars\, which had many respondents. \nThe new town of Peterborough was created around the time of the first moon landings although its cathedral\, situated at the heart of the ancient city\, will soon be celebrating its 900th anniversary. Even You Song combines the ancient traditions and rituals of the cathedral with the voices of people living in one of the fastest growing cities in Britain now. \nLucy and Bettina interviewed twelve Peterborough couples to find out whether they could make a one-year journey to the moon together\, and used these words to create a libretto. Then they invited the award-winning young composer Cheryl Frances-Hoad to set the words to music to the format of Evensong. In making the piece they wanted to invite Peterborough residents to experience the wonderful music that is performed in the Cathedral every single day. They also wanted the voices of local people to be heard in the piece.

SUMMARY:Waste Not\, Want Not
DESCRIPTION:  Almost 50% of the total amount of food thrown away in the UK comes from homes. This equates to 7 million tonnes of food and drink each year\, and more than half of this is food we could have eaten. \n·         4600 KILOCALORIES per day of food are harvested for every person on the planet; of these\, only around 2000 on average are eaten – more than half of it is lost on the way. \nBOOK YOUR FREE PLACE HERE.  \nWaste Not Want Not brings together a wealth of inspiration and experience from activists keen to reduce food waste and find new ways to make sure everyone has access to good food. Chaired by Ian Tennant this won’t be a case of telling us what to do – more a case of sharing some view points and inviting us all to join the discussion on what we can do to make an impact both nationally and locally. Locally initiatives such as Food Cycle\, Peterborough in Transition and the Women’s Institute will provide solid examples of what is already happening locally as well as offering ways to get involved. \nAbout the panel: \nCorin Bell is Director of Manchester’s Real Junk Food Project (RJFP). She is also a trustee at the Real Junk Food Charitable Foundation\, which launched towards the end of last year and supports sustainable and food waste projects across the UK. Corin started the Real Junk Food Project Manchester after becoming disillusioned with existing models attempting to tackle food waste and food poverty. Social exclusion is increasingly affecting our society\, and a great number of projects that target those in food poverty also segregate and isolate those people from the mainstream. She became interested in alternate economic models and operates Real Junk Food Manchester on a pay-as-you-feel basis. Their project also aims to balance practical action with constant campaigning to shift our broken food system. The Peterborough Food Cycle was set up earlier this year and serves tasty three-course meals on Thursdays (12.30 – 2pm) from Westgate Church. She works across sectors in Brighton & Hove to support a joined up effort to tackle food waste and promote more food-sharing. Since 2010\, the project has worked with individuals\, community groups\, food businesses\, the council\, universities\, and projects utilising surplus food in promoting and facilitating the actions outlined in the Food Waste Hierarchy.  Vera is also the Sussex Gleaning Coordinator for the Gleaning Network UK\, coordinating volunteers\, farmers and food redistribution charities to harvest farm surplus produce and direct this fresh\, nutritious food to people in need. Formed in 1915\, the WI has a long history of campaigning on a wide range of issues. WI Campaigns are about changing things for the better and tackling the issues that matter to members.83% of delegates voted in support of the NFWIs 2016 resolution to ‘avoid food waste and address food poverty’. DESCRIPTION:  \nMost cities share a complex and evolving dialogue between the rural and urban\, the industrial and agricultural\, the built environment and green spaces.
