SUMMARY:Food Gatherings: The Body Remembers with Kate Marsh
DESCRIPTION:Join artist-researcher Kate Marsh for a practical session exploring what the body remembers\, what we want to leave behind\, and what we want to take forward. During the night\, you’ll have access to all the nooks and crannies of the building\, to dance\, rest\, and explore. We’ll use improvisation and play to discover what’s possible when we have permission to fail. \nThis will be followed by a quick sharing over nibbles and refreshments. No prior experience needed. We’ll all arrive from our own place and pace\, privileging all experiences and ways of being in a playful\, accessible and generative environment. \nThis session is part of What’s Possible When Things Go Wrong\, a series of celebrations\, sharings\, and dinners to mark our final moments in the building and to explore what is possible when the sh*t hits the fan. \nBook your free tickets here. \nAbout Kate Marsh\nKate Marsh is a disabled / crip artist researcher. Assistant professor at C-Dare (centre for dance research at Coventry University). Kate’s practice – research is focused on nurturing spaces for everyone to develop and realise their ideas and practice. She is interested in re-imaging leadership in the arts in a way that truly makes access for everyone. \nWhat’s Possible When Things Go Wrong\nMetal and the other organisations based at Chauffeurs Cottage will be leaving in December. It wasn’t our decision and it’s one we’re still trying to get our heads around\, but we’re working hard to find a new space in the city that will be just as wonderful\, whilst celebrating all the magical moments we’ve spent here. \nBeing thrown into this situation has made us reflect on ‘necessity as a mother of invention’ – being faced with a challenging situation and being inspired to create a new imaginative solution. It’s made us dream about inspiring futures and what a queer\, accessible\, anti-racist space would look like from scratch.

SUMMARY:For One Night Only: The Gleaners and I (2000) with Cine Sister
DESCRIPTION:For one night only\, join Cine-Sister for a film screening of The Gleaners and I by Agnès Varda at Chauffeurs Cottage\, as part of our What’s Possible When Things Go Wrong programme. A series of celebrations\, sharings\, and dinners to mark our final moments in the building and to explore what is possible when the sh*t hits the fan. \nThe Gleaners and I (2000) is a poetic and deeply personal documentary that explores themes of waste\, resourcefulness\, and the overlooked lives of those who make use of society’s excess. Directed by French filmmaker Agnès Varda\, the film blends observational footage with intimate\, reflective narration as Varda sets out to document the practice of “gleaning” — the age-old act of collecting leftover crops from fields after harvest — and expands this concept to urban settings\, where people salvage food\, objects\, and materials discarded by others. The gleaners’ resourcefulness and resilience highlight how circumstances\, especially scarcity or social need\, drive creativity and new approaches to survival. The Gleaners and I is a portrait of people and a filmmaker embracing necessity as a catalyst for invention and creativity. \nBook your free tickets here. \nAbout Cine-Sister\nFounded in 2016 by Emily Steele\, Cine-Sister launched with its first screening in March 2017. Cine-Sister has since 2017 run 50+ successful events\, reaching 6000+ audiences. Cine-Sister was initially founded to showcase the work of women filmmakers and has taken a pop-up approach across Peterborough focusing on working in partnership with local organisations and community groups. SUMMARY:Hosted at Metal Liverpool: Gemini Tapes + Matthew Philips & Nick Branton
DESCRIPTION:Hosted at Metal Liverpool: AMQH (a.k.a. whi music) presents Gemini Tapes\, plus Matthew Philips and Nick Branton. \nGemini Tapes is Mark Greenwood (ex-Cavalier Song\, Prison Behaviour) and Peter Smyth (Bloodcog\, ex-Mugstar\, Kling Klang). They create an improvisational noise that uses cheap samplers\, tape loops\, feedback\, broken keyboards and guitar effects pedals\, chants and screams. \nMatthew Phillips (cello) and Nick Branton (bass clarinet) will open the evening as a pair. \nThe Calderstones at Calderstones Park were the first inspiration for Matthew and Nick to come together\, using sketches of these ancient stones as graphic scores to inform their improvisations. Now they are expanding – introducing different forms of graphic score and visual aid to help them explore other sonic possibilities. \nTickets are £7 / £5 and are available here via Ticketsource. \nPlease note: This event is ‘hosted at’ Metal Liverpool and functions outside of our programme as a dry hire. DESCRIPTION:Artist and researcher Zhuozhang Li returns to Metal on Saturday 31 August! Join us for the launch of the Planting and Placemaking mapping booklet\, plus an open discussion about railways\, placemaking and gardening. Zhuozhang will also be joined by Andrea Ku\, current PICTON PLAY artist and founder of B4Biodiversity. Book free tickets here. Following on from the workshop we held in May\, the Planting and Placemaking project explored the variety of community-based railway gardens along the Liverpool-Manchester line through two workshops at Edge Hill and Irlam station. Zhuozhang collected everyday perspectives on communities working together to create moments of gathering\, gardening\, and collective decision making on how natural spaces are used by the community.  The soon-to-be-launched Planting and Placemaking booklet features reflections from our Director\, Jenny Porter\, Marwa Al Khalidi (Lecturer\, University of Kent) and findings from the workshops held earlier this year on Health & Wellbeing\, Natural Resilience\, Biodiversity and Sustainability.   Free booklets will be available and refreshments will be provided. Book your free place here. The project is a knowledge exchange project funded by the University for the Creative Arts.
