DESCRIPTION:New date: This event was due to take place on Thursday 8 August\, we’re happy to announce its rescheduled date as this Thursday 15 August. \nHosted at Metal Liverpool\, Black Girl Watching Film Club in collaboration with LADFN presents a screening of Rockers (1978) followed by a discussion about the film. \nLegendary reggae artists play themselves in this exuberant tale of struggle and triumph. Leroy “Horsemouth” Wallace and Richard “Dirty Harry” Hall recruit a “Robin-Hood” band of friends to get even with some oppressive mafia types. \nWhat began as a documentary about the reggae scene in the 1970s and turned into a feature length film\, Rockers is a great lightning in a bottle film with a stellar cast of iconic Jamaican musicians. Not only is it a fantastic film with an amazing soundtrack but it also encapsulates this era of music in an extraordinary way. To celebrate Jamaican Independence Day\, Black Girl Watching Film Club presents a screening of this film on Thursday 8 August with a post-screening discussion. The sounds presented on their last record ENHANCER evoke a strange warmth\, shimmering and stretching with the intuition of acoustic improvisation. \nLola De La Mata is a composer\, sound artist and curator based between Liverpool and London. Her recent album Oceans on Azimuth was released to much acclaim\, reflecting on years of research and embodied experience on tinnitus and the architecture of our ears. She won Highly Commended from Amnesty International at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2013 for her play Our Glass House\, and The Scotsman Fringe First in 2014 for her play No Guts\, No Heart\, No Glory\, both with Common Wealth. No Guts\, a play about boxing Muslim women\, was selected for the Women of the World Festival at the Southbank Centre\, and Live from TVC with the Battersea Arts Centre screened on BBC4. Blood and Belonging is the title of Louise’s guest edition of writing magazine Writers Mosaic.  \nRaine\, Richard and Damian will speak about the importance of their GRT ancestry to explore questions such as “How does a blood lineage give you a sense of belonging?” “Is there such thing as a GRT community when so much of it is so diverse?”\nJoin this discussion and celebration of what we have in common. \n  \nAbout Richard\nRichard O’Neill is a storyteller\, author\, playwright\, animation scriptwriter and workshop leader based in the North of England. He conducts nomadic storytelling training sessions across Europe and co-founded Diverse Book Week to champion inclusivity and amplify diverse voices.\nHis upbringing in a traditional nomadic Romani family deeply influences his work\, inspiring him to leverage the power of storytelling in various formats to promote inclusion and acceptance.\nAwards include the ‘National Literacy Hero’ award for his impact on promoting literacy and diversity in literature\, the Beacon Leadership Award for community development and inclusion\, and a Royal Society of Literature Award. \nAbout Raine\nRaine Geoghegan (she/her) is a prize winning multi-disciplinary artist with an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Chichester. Born in the Welsh Valleys\, she is of Romany\, Welsh and Irish ethnicity. Her poems and prose have been published with Under the Radar\, Romany Routes Journal\, Poetry Ireland Review\, The Clearing\, Travellers’ Times and were featured in the documentary film\, Stories from the Hop Yards.\nRaine’s first pamphlet Apple Water: Povel Panni (2018) was chosen as a 2019 Spring Selection by the Poetry Book Society. Her second and third pamphlets are also published with Hedgehog Press. Her first full collection The Talking Stick: O Pookering Kosh (2022) was published by Salmon Poetry Press. She currently gives readings in the UK and Ireland and Australia. \nAbout Damian\nDamian Le Bas is a writer from the south coast of England. His first book The Stopping Places: a Journey through Gypsy Britain (2018) won the Somerset Maugham award\, a Royal Society of Literature Jerwood award\, and was shortlisted for the Stanford Dolman Travel Book of the Year. ACE are keen for more people from the Peterborough and Fenland area to apply. \nOn Friday 7 June\, we’re offering free sessions for global majority* artists who live and/or work within our local area (Peterborough\, Cambridgeshire\, and surrounding villages). This session will be supported by local artist Yvonne Hercules along with a member of the Metal team. These sessions will have an Arts Council project Grant focus\, but will be led by you and what you’d like to discuss\, which might include: \n– Talking through a project idea\n– Deciding which Arts Council funding stream is right for you\n– Budget development or reading draft applications\n– Discussing your creative practice\n– Building relationships with different organisations\, voluntary groups\, partners or venues to support an application \nAbout Yvonne Hercules\nYvonne Hercules is a singer-songwriter/artist & performer based in Cambridge UK. Her music has received nods from publications including Clash Magazine\, The Line of Best Fit\, Afropunk\, and others and she has received support from PRS Foundation\, Arts Council England towards her work. Inspired by Folk\, Blues\, Rock & Soul\, her songs are a culmination of these genres underpinned by honest\, thought-provoking lyrics. She also draws on inspiration from visual mediums outside of music including art & film\, with visual concepts often coinciding alongside her songs. \nHow to book\nWe’re offering these sessions in person at Chauffeurs Cottage\, as well as the option to discuss your work with us online. DESCRIPTION:Metal is supporting artist Xavier de Sousa for their multidisciplinary exhibition What Becomes… The exhibition explores the processes of adaptation that migrants go through when moving to a new place and to a new community. \n“When you move somewhere\, is the onus on you to adapt or others? And what becomes of us\, over time\, over all these changing landscapes?”  \nCreated in collaboration with members of the Peterborough community\, Xavier explains that the project “looks into how we change (in our souls\, in our behaviour\, in our language\, in our bodies) as a result of co-existing in a new place\, in a new culture.” \nBlending pottery work\, performance\, writing and sound art\, What Becomes… invites the audience to immerse themselves\, experience and also contribute their stories of adaptation. \nWhat Becomes… is Xavier de Sousa’s first exhibition and continues the collaboration with the communities of migrants and asylum seekers based in Peterborough and Leeds\, which started during their performance project REGNANT (2021). DESCRIPTION:In late 2019\, Josh Coates made the decision to change up his practice. He wanted to work in a more socially engaged way. Then a pandemic hit. Over the last 4 years\, he has explored what socially engaged practice means within his work\, and what it means to the communities\, organisations and people he creates with. During this session\, Josh will share his experiences and examples of previous work\, which are helping him to define and explore what socially engaged practice actually is. \nBook free tickets here. \nAbout Josh Coates\nJosh Coates (he/him) is a theatre maker and community organiser based in Liverpool. He makes work with people about people\, giving space for stories to be told in experimental and experiential forms for audiences. He uses autobiography and the gut reactions to political events\, and mixes them with popular culture to create a distinctive personal style. When he’s not in a rehearsal room\, he works with Homebaked Community Land Trust in Anfield\, creating events that bring neighbours together for a chat over a brew. \nHe has set fire to a backyard DIY theatre and watched the world burn with a set of polar bears with Powder Keg\, which he was a founding member of. He has collaborated with Blast Theory\, Belarus Free Theatre and Dan Bye and was a supported artist at the Royal Exchange\, Manchester. He has taken part in residences at HAU\, Berlin\, Theatre Nowy\, Warsaw and his most recent show Sunday Morning\, a digital walking tour of the internet\, was seen by audiences in Sweden\, Germany and USA. Neurodivergent can be used to describe all kinds of disabilities that affect how people think or develop\, including autism\, dyslexia\, dyspraxia\, ADHD and more. \nOur definitions of these terms have been helped by research carried out by Peterborough Presents via their Reasonable Adjustment project\, you can read more about here.

SUMMARY:Planting and Placemaking (Irlam) with artist Zhuozhang Li
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a creative workshop exploring the stories and histories of community gardens along the Liverpool and Manchester railway on Sunday 19 May at Lady James’ Hall from 1pm-3pm! \nPlanting and Placemaking Project (PPP) is a participatory mapping project by Zhuozhang Li that focuses on and celebrates community-based railway gardens along the Liverpool-Manchester railway. Are you an artist\, gardener\, eco-activist\, community gardener or nature enthusiast? We’re gathering at Lady James’ Hall in Irlam to share and exchange knowledge about ‘planting and placemaking’ at a site-specific workshop. \nThrough PPP\, Zhuozhang aims to ‘geographically re-connect the railway gardens between Liverpool and Manchester\, socially re-build a bridge between local communities and cultural organisations\, and together\, re-imagine an alternative relationship among community\, nature and urban infrastructure’. A creative activity will be led by artist Becky Peach\, with support from researcher Marwa Al Khalidi. \nBook your free tickets here. A travel bursary is available for participants.
