SUMMARY:MNAN: Access Riders for Artists with Edi McGurk
DESCRIPTION:Interdisciplinary artist Edi McGurk shares a beginner’s guide to Access Riders this month with Metal New Artist Network on Thursday 25 April. Come along to find out what an access rider is\, gain top tips on how you might write your own and learn ways to invite and act on these from your own creative collaborators or participants.\n\nEdi’s talk will be followed by our regular Q&A session as well as informal networking – a chance to share what you’re up to in your own practice! \nBook free tickets . \nAbout Edi\nEdi is an interdisciplinary artist based in Essex and\, from time-to-time\, East London. Due to chronic illness\, most of the time they’re based in bed. After starting out as a photographer\, they have developed their practice to centre access and spaciousness. This has meant working at a slower\, more long-term pace focusing on process and engagement – incorporating textiles\, print\, writing\, moving image and sound\, and performance. \nEdi creates socially-engaged work that tends to explore experiences of community and marginalisation\, memory and imagination – in particular they focus a lot on care\, queerness\, gender and cripness. They think a lot about time\, the internet\, the ways we can show up for each other\, and the role artists play in building a better world. \nKeep up with Edi’s work over on Instagram at @SleepyEdi and over on their website: https://edi.xyz/\n  \nJoin Metal New Artist Network\nA free session presented by Metal New Artist Network\nTo join the network and access the full free online programme\, follow the link above and fill out our short artist survey.

They graduated from the Open University with a Masters in English in 2022. They are a keen student of Oulipo and found poetry. \nThis story is a character study of grief and the people who experience it\, told through the eyes of a bewildered child who struggles to make sense of the death of his mother\, Mary and her re-emergence as a ghost. Except she won’t stay that way. She’s back with her family and none of them know what to do about it. Is there a name for someone who is only sort of dead? And why does Claude feel like he’s the only one celebrating her return? ‘Not All There’ is a character study of grief and the people who experience it\, told through the eyes of a bewildered child who struggles to make sense of the death of his mother\, Mary and her re-emergence as a ghost. Familial relationships are tested as Claude\, Patience and their father try to answer the question – ‘What do we do about Mary?’

SUMMARY:Fan Fiction Workshop: Reimagining the Future
DESCRIPTION:Join members of Babeworld for a workshop exploring fan fiction* as an empowering tool for transformation and re-imagining futures. \nBabeworld will explore the building of new communities and relationships during the creation of fan fiction\, to showcase stories that are not usually represented in mainstream media. They will use creative writing techniques to show why it is important to reimagine popular narratives in a way that represents us. \nDuring the workshop participants will be encouraged to create their own fan fiction\, either through creative writing or other forms such as collages\, painting and voice recording. Babeworld will give prompts to help with character creation\, with a chance at the end to share what you have made and to discuss how your fan fiction better represents us. \n*What is Fan Fiction?\nFan fiction is fiction created by a fan of\, and often including characters\, from an already existing piece of fiction. It often exists as writing but has many other forms including visual art\, collage and memes. Fan fiction regularly features plotlines which often wouldn’t be seen in traditional mainstream media and represents marginalised communities. \nAbout Babeworld\nBabeworld seeks to create a more representative art world through the creation of art\, fundraising and creating grants\, and facilitation of events – for those who are marginalised in the arts. With an emphasis on collaboration and co-creation\, Babeworld’s practice focuses on themes of political and societal identity\, disability/access\, neurodivergence\, sex work and race. \nStrong Bonds for a Fragile Planet\nThis event was originally curated as part of our ‘Strong Bonds for a Fragile Planet’ programme\, which ran from 24 February to 2 March and brought together artists and curious people through walks\, talks\, dinners and workshops to consider what we need at a time when the world feels fragile in many ways. We had to postpone this event the first time around due to train strike\, but let us know you can make it by booking your free spot .

Bille uses hapticity and psychogeography to connect threads and words. She hand-spins ropes which are knotted by participants as part of performative events. Billie’s approach to multi-layered storytelling is influenced by her Andean Background. Her practice includes many voices\, presenting a world view through the indigenous language of Quechua that is relational and complex.

SUMMARY:We have found in the ashes what we lost in the fire: A conversation with Kate Genever
DESCRIPTION:Throughout February\, artist Kate Genever has been carrying out her residency “We have found in the ashes what we lost in the fire” as part of our Strong Bonds for a Fragile Planet programme. The residency is a response to the overarching themes of the Strong Bonds for a Fragile Planet programme and informed by recent conversations Kate has had with visual artists and curators about how they make to recover\, rejuvenate\, refresh and rest.   \nWith other artists Kate has been researching how ease\, peace and rejuvenation can be found in creative processes. Seeking out and displaying this work\, alongside her own and finally reflecting on how what she’s learnt\, and how it might offer a useful counterpoint to our commodified “well being” culture.   \nAs part of this work Kate will be hosting a conversation and Q&A about her findings on Saturday 2nd March\, 3pm. She’d love you to join her to find out more about her discoveries.  \nLet us know you’re coming by clicking the booking link here.   \nKate Genever \nKate Genever is an artist and farmer based in South Lincolnshire. As a farmer\, alongside her family\, she runs a traditional mixed farm of suckler cows\, sheep and combinable crops.    \nAs an artist she tries to make sense of the world through drawing. Taking drawing to be more than a technique – “rather a disposition that reveals our connections with the world of materials\, nature and each other… a drawing from\, with and together”. Over extended periods\, she builds deep connections with people and place\, in the celebration and support of DIY responses and community actions.   \nKate’s residency “We have found in the ashes what we lost in the fire” is part of the Stronger Bonds for a Fragile Planet programme in February 2024.    \nKeep up with Kate on her website at kategenever.com and over on Instagram @kategenever  \nStrong bonds for a Fragile Planet \nStrong Bonds for a Fragile Planet will bring together artists and curious people through walks\, talks\, dinners and workshops to consider what we need at a time when the world feels fragile in many ways.  Inspired by ideas from the book ‘Radical Intimacy’ by Sophie K Rosa\, Strong Bonds for a Fragile Planet will explore the themes of home and refuge\, the idea of rest and solidarity\, community and connection through a varied series of events. SUMMARY:Radical Imagination: design inspired by collective creativity
DESCRIPTION:In this hands-on workshop\, as part of Future Network\, join Ramona Zadissa (they/them) where you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with other participants to construct designs based on Islamic geometry to embrace a new form of intimacy through collaborative creativity and collective learning.  \nTogether we will explore the hidden mathematical concepts behind the intricate patterns of Islamic art\, where mathematics\, spirituality\, and aesthetics converge seamlessly.   \nThis workshop draws inspiration from Sophie K Rosa’s book Radical Intimacy\, questioning societal expectations and capitalist ideologies prescribing a singular path to fulfilment. In the spirit of radical imagination\, we challenge conventional norms and embrace a new form of intimacy through collaborative creativity and collective learning.   \nDuring the workshop you will focus on the creative process of creating work together\, while learning a new technique. Participants will create artworks\, that might disappear/ aren’t lasting\, and create Islamic geometric designs on large rolls of paper\, creating something together.   \nThis workshop isn’t just about learning the basics of Islamic geometric design; it’s a call to reimagine our relationship with art\, society\, and ourselves.  \nWhat is Islamic Geometric design? \nThe geometric designs in Islamic art are often built on combinations of repeated squares and circles\, which may be overlapped and interlaced\, as can arabesques (with which they are often combined)\, to form intricate and complex patterns.   \nAbout Ramona Zadissa \nRamona Zadissa (they/them) is a creative freelancer\, passionate about community engagement\, collaborative learning\, skill sharing\, and curious about ways to make this world a colourfully brilliant place for all.  \nStrong Bonds for a Fragile Planet \nStrong Bonds for a Fragile Planet will bring together artists and curious people through walks\, talks\, dinners and workshops to consider what we need at a time when the world feels fragile in many ways.  \nInspired by ideas from the book ‘Radical Intimacy’ by Sophie K.
