SUMMARY:PICTON PLAY: Dens of Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Build dens in nature with artist and environmentalist Andrea Ku.  \nOur Listen Residency artist Andrea Ku will lead Dens of Sanctuary workshops on Saturdays 9\, 16 and 23\, from 12pm to 3pm. The first session on 9 March will be at Edge Hill Station and the following two sessions will be at Wavertree Botanic Park. (Due to unforeseen circumstances\, the session on Saturday 30 March has been cancelled). \nWe’ll learn how to make dens for creatures of different sizes\, thinking about what they need to stay warm and sheltered. Suitable for all ages and no previous den-building experience necessary. Free to attend with materials and a packed lunch provided. You can come to any or all sessions.  \nWavertree Botanic Garden and Park was established in 1836 by William Roscoe as a place of sanctuary for the people of Liverpool to enjoy and experience nature. For the past month\, Andrea has been on an artistic residency in the park\, researching the history and exploring the animal and plant wildlife found there. This series of workshops will explore the relationship people living nearby have with the park.   \nJoin us as we collectively create unique dens of sanctuary and celebrate all its inhabitants.   \nIf you/your group is interested in joining\, please email jon.davies@metalculture.com.  \nDens of Sanctuary is part of our PICTON PLAY project supported by Culture Liverpool and Liverpool City Council.

SUMMARY:Lucky Dip
DESCRIPTION:Lucky Dip is back at Chalkwell Hall on Wednesday 6 March! This quarterly event is a space for local artists and creatives to meet new faces\, connect\, share ideas and celebrate the joy in art. \nBook free tickets here. \nFirst up\, we’ll have a creative workshop led by our guest artist host for this month\, Elspeth Billie Penfold. \nElspeth will guide us through her artistic practice which combines walking\, weaving and performative storytelling. After a performance and short video\, we’ll explore the creative space through a historical textile technique known as ‘quipu’. Elspeth’s session will end collaboratively as we assemble a woven vara pole together\, connecting threads and poetry. \nThe second half is for mingling. Our bar will be open\, and we’ll be spinning our artist-made tombola created especially for Southend. Come with something to share\, to spark collaborations\, and even throw those creative challenges you’ve been chewing on into the mix. \nLucky Dip breaks down the formal format of networking to bring people together in an accessible\, fun and informal way. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just dipping your toes into Southend’s art scene\, join us for evenings that are relaxed and creatively inspiring. \nDoors are at 7pm and tickets are limited\, so be sure to book your free place here. \nA bit about Elspeth \nElspeth (Billie) Penfold is a textile artist who combines walking\, weaving and performative storytelling. Bille uses hapticity and psychogeography to connect threads and words. She hand-spins ropes which are knotted by participants as part of performative events. Billie’s approach to multi-layered storytelling is influenced by her Andean Background. Her practice includes many voices\, presenting a world view through the indigenous language of Quechua that is relational and complex.

SUMMARY:We have found in the ashes what we lost in the fire: A conversation with Kate Genever
DESCRIPTION:Throughout February\, artist Kate Genever has been carrying out her residency “We have found in the ashes what we lost in the fire” as part of our Strong Bonds for a Fragile Planet programme. The residency is a response to the overarching themes of the Strong Bonds for a Fragile Planet programme and informed by recent conversations Kate has had with visual artists and curators about how they make to recover\, rejuvenate\, refresh and rest.   \nWith other artists Kate has been researching how ease\, peace and rejuvenation can be found in creative processes. Seeking out and displaying this work\, alongside her own and finally reflecting on how what she’s learnt\, and how it might offer a useful counterpoint to our commodified “well being” culture.   \nAs part of this work Kate will be hosting a conversation and Q&A about her findings on Saturday 2nd March\, 3pm. She’d love you to join her to find out more about her discoveries.  \nLet us know you’re coming by clicking the booking link here.   \nKate Genever \nKate Genever is an artist and farmer based in South Lincolnshire. As a farmer\, alongside her family\, she runs a traditional mixed farm of suckler cows\, sheep and combinable crops.    \nAs an artist she tries to make sense of the world through drawing. Taking drawing to be more than a technique – “rather a disposition that reveals our connections with the world of materials\, nature and each other… a drawing from\, with and together”. Over extended periods\, she builds deep connections with people and place\, in the celebration and support of DIY responses and community actions.   \nKate’s residency “We have found in the ashes what we lost in the fire” is part of the Stronger Bonds for a Fragile Planet programme in February 2024.    \nKeep up with Kate on her website at kategenever.com and over on Instagram @kategenever  \nStrong bonds for a Fragile Planet \nStrong Bonds for a Fragile Planet will bring together artists and curious people through walks\, talks\, dinners and workshops to consider what we need at a time when the world feels fragile in many ways.  Inspired by ideas from the book ‘Radical Intimacy’ by Sophie K Rosa\, Strong Bonds for a Fragile Planet will explore the themes of home and refuge\, the idea of rest and solidarity\, community and connection through a varied series of events. SUMMARY:Radical Imagination: design inspired by collective creativity
DESCRIPTION:In this hands-on workshop\, as part of Future Network\, join Ramona Zadissa (they/them) where you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with other participants to construct designs based on Islamic geometry to embrace a new form of intimacy through collaborative creativity and collective learning.  \nTogether we will explore the hidden mathematical concepts behind the intricate patterns of Islamic art\, where mathematics\, spirituality\, and aesthetics converge seamlessly.   \nThis workshop draws inspiration from Sophie K Rosa’s book Radical Intimacy\, questioning societal expectations and capitalist ideologies prescribing a singular path to fulfilment. In the spirit of radical imagination\, we challenge conventional norms and embrace a new form of intimacy through collaborative creativity and collective learning.   \nDuring the workshop you will focus on the creative process of creating work together\, while learning a new technique. Participants will create artworks\, that might disappear/ aren’t lasting\, and create Islamic geometric designs on large rolls of paper\, creating something together.   \nThis workshop isn’t just about learning the basics of Islamic geometric design; it’s a call to reimagine our relationship with art\, society\, and ourselves.  \nWhat is Islamic Geometric design? \nThe geometric designs in Islamic art are often built on combinations of repeated squares and circles\, which may be overlapped and interlaced\, as can arabesques (with which they are often combined)\, to form intricate and complex patterns.   \nAbout Ramona Zadissa \nRamona Zadissa (they/them) is a creative freelancer\, passionate about community engagement\, collaborative learning\, skill sharing\, and curious about ways to make this world a colourfully brilliant place for all.  \nStrong Bonds for a Fragile Planet \nStrong Bonds for a Fragile Planet will bring together artists and curious people through walks\, talks\, dinners and workshops to consider what we need at a time when the world feels fragile in many ways.  \nInspired by ideas from the book ‘Radical Intimacy’ by Sophie K. SUMMARY:'Home is now - we are home': Interactive walk with Hayley Harrison #1
DESCRIPTION:Join artist Hayley Harrison for an interactive walk at dusk through Peterborough city centre to the river and back. During the walk\, Hayley will project words onto buildings\, benches and branches around us to make us reflect on our relationships to the landscape we are walking through\, and to the humans and non-humans we are sharing space with.   \nAfter the walk\, we will return to Chauffeurs Cottage to think about ‘home’ in the context of the earth crisis and capitalism. We will consider if we have found the refuge we need on our walk\, and if the landscape reflected our everyday desires for ourselves and our communities.   \nAt the end everyone will be invited to write their own text\, question or message which will be shared and projected at the second walk. These calls could reflect what we want or need\, or simply how we feel about what is needed to remake and reconnect the landscapes and communities around us.   \nBook your free place on the walk . \nAbout Hayley Harrison \nHayley Harrison works with people\, performance\, alternative photography\, text and projected moving image. SUMMARY:I will not be dragooned...
DESCRIPTION:The TOMA 2022/24 cohort and TOMA Associates\, are taking over Chalkwell Hall for a weekend exhibition\, events and workshops.  \nPrivate view: Friday 9 February\, 6-10pm. Join the guestlist here.\nExhibition open: Saturday 10 & Sunday 11 February\, 12-5pm. \n‘I will not be dragooned…’ aka ‘I will not be frightened out’. The family motto of the original owner of Chalkwell Hall\, as discovered by Rachel Lichtenstein\, author and archivist. In 2008\, Rachel was invited for a residency to help Metal uncover the history of Chalkwell Hall. The motto has been reinstated in the foyer of the building\, providing inspiration and encouragement for those who use the space today.  \nTOMA artists were enticed by this motto and felt it pertinent to their current practices and the ‘dreaming’ ways of TOMA. I will not be dragooned… presents a collection of works that hold a sense of strength\, history and belonging. From looking at this motto through a lens of perspectives and diverse creative practices\, TOMA artists have found insightful ways to express their own wills to not be dragooned.  \nWhether it be looking into the intricate and multifaceted nature of the internet\, slowing down\, taking haste\, engaging in child play\, sitting under trees\, seeking contemplation\, growing the capacity of our gardens\, reflecting on our public spaces or encouraging people to simply (yet profoundly) ‘get around to it’\, we invite you to embrace our individual creative processes and perhaps discover your own response to this motto. This exhibition shows how we benefit from coming together in collaboration to embolden each other’s fascinations.  \nTOMA current cohort artists:\n– Neeral Bhatt\n– Graham Burnett\n– Erene Dellaporta\n– James Forward\n– Gülşen Güler\n– Joanna Hartle\n– Edi McGurk\n– Eva Sbaraini\n– Kate Sullivan\n– Fredrix Vermin\n– Fern Worsley  \nTOMAssociates:\n– Fiona Bennett\n– Peter Haugh\n– Blandine Martin\n– Emma Mills\n– Paige Ockendon\n– Grace Price\n– Jonathan Rust\n– Jessica Scott\n– Gemma Shaw\n– Victoria Sills\n– Philippa Stewart\n  \nThe Other MA (TOMA) is an artist-run education model and exhibition space based in Southend on Sea which supports artists who have faced barriers accessing art education and the ‘art world’.

SUMMARY:Future Network - Papercut and Tell with Fasiha Ashiq
DESCRIPTION:Residency artist Fasiha Ashiq is hosting a papercutting workshop as part of our Future Network programme. Come along to learn how to tell a story through the intricate art of papercutting\, explore new techniques and make connections with local creatives. \n \nPapercutting involves designs being cut into a single sheet of paper and the pieces that are cut away reveal the image you are making. They are often displayed in light boxes or frames. Fasiha will explore stories of identity and memories that sparked joy\, and will teach you how to translate these stories into papercuts. During the workshop\, we’ll look at cutting a scene into a silhouette. A happy memory or objects that remind you of a positive moment will be the main focus.  \nThe workshop will offer a chance to reflect on your art practice through storytelling and experiment with papercutting techniques.   \nNo prior experience of papercutting is needed\, just your creativity and an open mind!    \nDuring lunch\, there will be the opportunity for participants to connect and share what you’ve created\, talk about your own practice\, or just find out what people are up to. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided\, but please feel free to bring your own lunch.   \nIf you have any questions or queries\, then please feel free to get in touch at sarah@metalculture.com or on 01733 893077   \n  \nAbout Fasiha Ashiq  \nFasiha is a Peterborough based artist\, telling stories through illustration\, painting and paper cutting. Fasiha is currently exploring the emotional and familial impact colonialism has had on identity and people like herself. Fasiha has taken a recent interest in exploring the juxtaposition between the aesthetic nature of papercut illustration and the potential dark stories that develop from post-colonial history. Fasiha uses papercutting as a style that is reminiscent of wood carving practiced in Asia. She feels this is also a craft that takes patience and time\, it’s a mindful space to be in when working.  \nImage credits: Fasiha Ashiq \n  \n

SUMMARY:Objects of Affection: Creative Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Objects of Affection: Creative writing workshop with Izzie Major \n“The creative mind plays with the objects it loves” – Carl Jung \nSunday 5 November\, 2-5pm (including 20 minute break) at Metal Liverpool \nA creative writing workshop unlocking the creative power of ‘things’. Using objects as inspiration for creative writing\, Izzie will lead a series of playful automatic writing exercises and improvisations aimed at awakening the subconscious\, encouraging participants to both be and create with their chosen objects. Using a mixture of play\, ritual and dream-theory\, participants will be led to connect sensuously with their objects\, revealing potential inner/outer worlds\, dreams and fantasies\, exploring the object’s vital presence and what this may reveal to us about our own innermost desires and sense of humanity. \nFor the final section of the workshop\, we will have the opportunity to perform our writings and creative actions to one another. \nPlease select an object from your home that you would like to connect a little deeper with and bring it with you. Perhaps something you don’t understand (like an uncomfortable pillow) or something you have a long and complicated relationship with (like a piece of cutlery). Participants should bring an object from their home they do not mind others handling or working with. \nNew writers and established writers welcome. \nTo book\, please visit the link here. Limited to 20 places. \n“Under this mask\, another mask. I will never be finished removing all these faces” – Claude Cahun \n“For beauty to work\, there must be a surface capable of receiving the wound.” ― Timothy Morton \nNote: Metal Liverpool has step-free access to the rear of platform 1-2. \nAbout the artist \n \nIzzie Major is a performance artist whose work explores the absurd\, the ritualistic\, the macabre\, the feminine and the grotesque. She has a current obsession and love/hate relationship with domesticity\, it’s strange and questionable role in humanity. SUMMARY:The Signalman: A Ghost Story by Charles Dickens
DESCRIPTION:From the Producers of Kitty: Queen of the Washhouse and A Portrait of William Roscoe comes a slice of winter terror with a new adaptation of the much-loved Charles Dickens supernatural classic\, The Signalman. \n“As solitary a place as ever I saw…It struck a chill to me\, as if I had left the natural world.” \nA ghostly figure has visited the signalman twice already\, each time preceding a terrible disaster. When the apparition appears for the third time\, it’s up to the signalman to decode its meaning and prevent another catastrophe. \nA gripping slice of gothic horror from Charles Dickens\, regarded as the greatest horror story ever written. \nIn the tradition of classic oral storytelling\, a lantern and two players is all that is needed to tell the spine tingling tale of the Signalman. \nThe tour starts at the atmospheric Engine Room at Metal\, Edge Hill Station and will visit various locations during November. \nIncluding\, the idyllic Mansion House\, The Reader at Calderstones\, the popular pub theatre in Salford\, The Kings Arms\, the reputed establishment Liverpool Athenaeum and a new performance space for Artsgroupie\, The Storey in Lancaster. \nAfter the success of last year’s Ghost Stories for Xmas\, which will be returning in December\, Artsgroupie is delighted to be working again with esteemed local writer and director David Griffiths\, \n  \n“The Signalman is a powerful and haunting story about survivor’s guilt and isolation – something we believe will be of striking relevance to our audience following the pandemic. Our inability to control events around us can be more frightening than any ghost\, as Dickens knew well. He wrote from experience\, a survivor of the Staplehurst railway disaster – events that both inspired and haunted the author.” \nDavid Griffiths\, Writer and Director \n  \n“Last year\, I worked with David on a critically acclaimed production of Orwell’s 1984 and Artsgroupie produced the successful Ghost Stories For Xmas. \nWe are delighted to be once again collaborating on a much- loved classic\, playing some new locations and re-visiting some of our favourite local venues.” \nJohn Maguire\, Creative Director ArtsGroupie \n  \nThere will be two performances of The Signalman at Metal\, Platform 1 Edge Hill railway station\, L7 6ND – on Saturday 4 November at: \n2pm and \n4pm. \n  \nTickets are available here. \n  \nPlease note: this event is ‘hosted at’ Metal Liverpool and functions outside of our programme as a private hire. SUMMARY:Balancing the Light & Dark: an afternoon of yoga & life drawing
DESCRIPTION:As the clocks go back\, join us to reset body and mind with a balancing Hatha Raja Vinyasa Krama yoga practice and an immersive life drawing. \nHatha Raja Vinyasa Krama yoga is a complete practice. In this class we work to bring the body and mind into stillness\, withdrawing from our surroundings and moving towards observation of the inner self. The asana practice builds in steps (“Krama”) from the easiest to a more complex “peak pose” with numerous variations and modifications offered along the way. The class will bring participants into a self-observational space in preparation for an hour of life drawing. Life drawing is a brilliant practice to observe the body in stillness. We will do a series of basic poses where participants will be encouraged to play\, and draw freely with expression. \nNo prior experience of yoga or life drawing is required. In signing up to the workshop\, you acknowledge that you are in good physical health and that you are fit to take part safely in a yoga class. You will discuss with Sira Yoga if you have any medical conditions or contra-indications that may impact on your yoga practice or your ability to engage in the class. \nNo prior experience of life drawing is needed. Please bring along any preferred materials including a pencil\, rubber and paper. There will be some materials available if needed. \n  \nSunday 22 October 1-4pm \nTicket price: £27 (includes booking fee) – click here to book via Eventbrite. \n  \nAfter leaving a career in academia\, Sian Lincoln established Sira Yoga in April 2023\, having completed her yoga teacher training with internationally renowned teacher Ambra Vallo. She has a number of private students in Liverpool for whom she curates classes. She also teaches small group yoga classes.
