SUMMARY:Future Network - Papercut and Tell with Fasiha Ashiq
DESCRIPTION:Residency artist Fasiha Ashiq is hosting a papercutting workshop as part of our Future Network programme. Come along to learn how to tell a story through the intricate art of papercutting\, explore new techniques and make connections with local creatives. \n \nPapercutting involves designs being cut into a single sheet of paper and the pieces that are cut away reveal the image you are making. They are often displayed in light boxes or frames. Fasiha will explore stories of identity and memories that sparked joy\, and will teach you how to translate these stories into papercuts. During the workshop\, we’ll look at cutting a scene into a silhouette. A happy memory or objects that remind you of a positive moment will be the main focus.  \nThe workshop will offer a chance to reflect on your art practice through storytelling and experiment with papercutting techniques.   \nNo prior experience of papercutting is needed\, just your creativity and an open mind!    \nDuring lunch\, there will be the opportunity for participants to connect and share what you’ve created\, talk about your own practice\, or just find out what people are up to. Fasiha is currently exploring the emotional and familial impact colonialism has had on identity and people like herself. Fasiha has taken a recent interest in exploring the juxtaposition between the aesthetic nature of papercut illustration and the potential dark stories that develop from post-colonial history. Fasiha uses papercutting as a style that is reminiscent of wood carving practiced in Asia. Want to get some feedback about something you’re working on? For our final Metal New Artist Network session of the year\, we’re welcoming dance artist\, researcher and producer Kate Marsh for an informal online sharing session.  \n  \nThere will be space to talk about what projects you’re working on\, any ideas you might have\, problems you’ve encountered as an artist\, and to network with other creatives to build your own artist connections.   \n  \nKate will open the session with an icebreaker\, before sharing about her own practice and experience of being an artist\, academic and producer. The digital floor is then open to you! Feel free to ask questions\, share your screen\, tell people what you’re up to and ask for support. Kate will facilitate the session so you can focus on sharing.  \n  \nWondering what to share? It could be:  \n– An idea for a piece/performance\n– An artist bio you’ve been working on\n– Questions around funding applications\n– Finding collaborators for a project\n– Top tips you’ve discovered being an artist\n– Feedback on an idea or piece of work  \nIf you’re unsure about sharing but don’t want to miss out on the conversation\, you can still come along and listen. DESCRIPTION:Objects of Affection: Creative writing workshop with Izzie Major \n“The creative mind plays with the objects it loves” – Carl Jung \nSunday 5 November\, 2-5pm (including 20 minute break) at Metal Liverpool \nA creative writing workshop unlocking the creative power of ‘things’. Using objects as inspiration for creative writing\, Izzie will lead a series of playful automatic writing exercises and improvisations aimed at awakening the subconscious\, encouraging participants to both be and create with their chosen objects. Using a mixture of play\, ritual and dream-theory\, participants will be led to connect sensuously with their objects\, revealing potential inner/outer worlds\, dreams and fantasies\, exploring the object’s vital presence and what this may reveal to us about our own innermost desires and sense of humanity. \nFor the final section of the workshop\, we will have the opportunity to perform our writings and creative actions to one another. \nPlease select an object from your home that you would like to connect a little deeper with and bring it with you. Perhaps something you don’t understand (like an uncomfortable pillow) or something you have a long and complicated relationship with (like a piece of cutlery). DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to welcome singer song-writer Yvonne Hercules\, who will be co-hosting our next reading group as part of our Reading Room. We have asked Yvonne to select three books from our Reading Room that are of interest to her and her creative practice which are: \n\nFeminism\, Interrupted by Lola Olufemi\nAn Autobiography by Angela Davis\nAin’t I A Woman by bell hooks\n\nJoin Yvonne for an informal conversation over some tasty food\, exploring the nuances of black femininity. Yvonne will share the work of black feminists Angela Davis\, bell hooks\, and Lola Olufemi to kickstart conversations and discussion. \nOver the course of the session\, we will explore themes of black feminism and its intersectionality. \nThere’s no requirement to have read any of the books or have encountered the author’s work before\, they are just starting points to kickstart conversations with freedom to see where they go. Passages will be read out\, with audio or video interview clips played offering a chance for people to discuss and delve into topics. \nThe reading group is free to attend and open to all. This is a chance to make new friends\, gain new perspectives and step outside your comfort zone. \nThis event\, part of a cross-site programme involving some of our long-term and new collaborators\, recognises Black History Month which celebrates the invaluable contributions of black people to British Society.  \nInterested but want to find out more? Her music has received nods from publications including Clash Magazine\, The Line of Best Fit\, Afropunk\, and others and she has received support from PRS Foundation\, Arts Council England towards her work. \nInspired by Folk\, Blues\, Rock & Soul\, her songs are a culmination of these genres underpinned by honest\, thought-provoking lyrics. She also draws on inspiration from visual mediums outside of music including art & film\, with visual concepts often coinciding alongside her songs. \nHer recent EP ‘Olive’ is partly inspired by the life & work of feminist activist Olive Morris\, and is a musical journey through Black Femininity and its nuances referencing alternative folk\, alternative soul\, jazz and rock genres. \n  \nOur Access \nThe lobby and mainspace are all on the groundfloor\, with automatic doors to enter the lobby. DESCRIPTION: Metal Open Advice Sessions for artists are back!  \nOn Wednesday 25 October\, we’re offering free sessions for global majority artists who live and/or work within our local area (South Essex – Basildon\, Brentwood\, Castle Point\, Rochford\, Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock). This session will be supported by artist Elsa James along with the Southend team. Sessions will be led by you and what you’d like to discuss\, which might include:  \n-Discussing your creative practice\n-Talking through a project idea\n– Advice or sign posting to different funding routes or opportunities\n–Building relationships with different organisations\, voluntary groups\, partners or venues\n–Budget development or reading draft applications  \nWe’re offering these sessions in person at Chalkwell Hall\, as well as the option to discuss your work with us online. There is one session available per artist and the slots are 1 hour long. Book here. \nMeet Elsa James:\nElsa James is a British African-Caribbean conceptual artist and activist living in Essex since 1999. Her practice is rooted in contemporary Black activism and invested in an ongoing questioning of visibility and belonging that centres Blackness as a methodology for liberation. Through an interdisciplinary\, collaborative and research-based practice\, she works across live performance\, film\, prints\, spoken word\, neon\, and sound. She was a finalist for the prestigious Freelands Award with Focal Point Gallery in 2021 and\, this year\, a nominated recipient of the Henry Moore Foundation Artists Award. Her work is held in private and public collections\, including the Government Art Collection and Beecroft Art Gallery\, for which she became the first Black British artist to be acquired into the gallery’s collection. In 2022\, she was named one of the 50 Most Influential People in Essex. \n \nSessions will be open on a first come first served basis so book your free place here. \nWe are holding these sessions in response to our open call residencies and conversations with artists\, partners and the Metal team. DESCRIPTION:As the clocks go back\, join us to reset body and mind with a balancing Hatha Raja Vinyasa Krama yoga practice and an immersive life drawing. \nHatha Raja Vinyasa Krama yoga is a complete practice. In this class we work to bring the body and mind into stillness\, withdrawing from our surroundings and moving towards observation of the inner self. The asana practice builds in steps (“Krama”) from the easiest to a more complex “peak pose” with numerous variations and modifications offered along the way. The class will bring participants into a self-observational space in preparation for an hour of life drawing. Life drawing is a brilliant practice to observe the body in stillness. We will do a series of basic poses where participants will be encouraged to play\, and draw freely with expression. \nNo prior experience of yoga or life drawing is required. In signing up to the workshop\, you acknowledge that you are in good physical health and that you are fit to take part safely in a yoga class. You will discuss with Sira Yoga if you have any medical conditions or contra-indications that may impact on your yoga practice or your ability to engage in the class. \nNo prior experience of life drawing is needed. SUMMARY:Style Wars - film screening at Edge Hill station
DESCRIPTION:As part of our Black History Month programme\, Liverpool Hip Hop Festival and Metal are proud to present a special screening of Style Wars at Edge Hill train station\, Liverpool. \nLauded as the definitive hip hop documentary of its era\, 1983’s Style Wars became iconic for capturing the moment the graffiti scene rose in prominence before becoming an international phenomenon. The film follows early-days graffiti writers from the streets of New York into their homes and meeting their families\, alongside interviews with ‘talking heads’ authority figures such as spokespeople from the mayor’s office. \nStyle Wars helped to put hip-hop on the map – not just as an emerging style of music in rap but as a multi-faceted biproduct of\, and response\, to inner city life in the late 20th century. Hip hop has of course become appreciated since the 1980s as potentially the USA’s most valuable cultural export\, in Style Wars we see a flash back to when breakdancing\, beatboxing\, basketball and of course the act of painting on subway trains were all part of a vibrant\, wholly new creative-artistic-expressive spectrum that was largely lumped together as criminal activity. Misunderstood by wider society\, and certainly not part of mainstream cultural conversations\, over time this film can be seen as partly helping to correct those misconceptions about graffiti – and hip hop at large. Listen out for the classic one-liners and snippets of dialogue that have made their way into rap music samples since the film’s initial release (hint: “King of Style”)!  \nJoin us for a celebration of 50 years of Hip Hop\, with additional activities hosted by Liverpool rap music’s finest Nikki Blaze and Tony Broke to accompany the screening. \nThis event is suitable for audience members aged 16+. \nTickets are available here at this link. \nFind us at the first set of double yellow doors on your right as you arrive at Platform 1 in Edge Hill station. \nDoors open at 6:30pm for a 7pm film start time. Style Wars running time: 1hr 9min. \nSpace is limited so book early to avoid disappointment\, though we will aim to accommodate walk-ups on the night where we can. Please be aware we do not have central heating so wrapping up in warm layers is encouraged. DESCRIPTION:Africa Oyé and Metal present a musical instrument workshop and performance with griot and world-class Kora player\, Diabel Cissokho. \nPart of the great line of Cissokho griots\, Diabel grew up in Dakar and Tambacounda\, Senegal. Surrounded by a rich musical heritage and a family of musicians\, he began playing a number of traditional instruments. However\, his affinity with the kora was clear from an early age. A trailblazer and pioneer of the kora\, Diabel’s virtuosic talent\, his “resonant voice and rocking kora style” (Songlines)\, have been welcomed everywhere from WOMAD\, Queen Elizabeth Hall\, Glastonbury\, Africa Oyé and the Barbican\, including a long stint as Baaba Maal’s kora player. \nDiabel Cissokho will host a musical instrument workshop and short acoustic performance at Metal Liverpool on Wednesday 18th October at their Platform 1 building in Edge Hill railway station. \nDoors to Metal will open at 6pm with a workshop start time of 6:30pm sharp. \nEntry to this event is free of charge\, but places are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment. \nReserve a place on Eventbrite – limited to 25 places\, so please return your free ticket to someone on the Waiting List if you’re unable to attend. \nDiabel Cissokho’s workshops forms part of Metal Liverpool’s Black History Month programme. DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to welcome artist Martha Cattell to host an Alternative Process Photography workshop as part of our Future Network programme. \n\n\nDuring the workshop we will think about how you can have a more sustainable art practice with a focus on alternative process photography and testing out multiple ways of making camera-less photography. DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to be hosting our next reading group as part of the Growing Together in Peterborough: Exploring and Celebrating Food Systems programme.\nOver the past year\, Metal has been hosting a series of reading groups. These provide a space to connect\, discuss and explore the themes of a book published by The Left Book Club and Pluto Press. \nFor this book group we will be exploring ‘The Politics of Permaculture’ by Terry Leahy.\nWe’ll be using the book as a launch pad to learn about what permaculture is as a social movement\, how it could be put into practice\, and how to create new communities that work with nature. \nThere’s no requirement to have read the book\, the book is a starting point to kickstart conversations\, with freedom to see where they go. Lines and passages will be read out\, offering a chance for people to challenge and delve into topics. \nThe reading group is free to attend and open to all. This is a chance to make new friends\, gain new perspectives and step outside your comfort zone.\nInterested but want to find out more? The doors are wide enough for an electric wheelchair. In the lobby there are a series of doorways. \nThe doorway on the right leads to the mainspace where the group will take place\, which is wide enough for an electric wheelchair. \nBack in the lobby\, the doorway directly ahead of you is to a gender neutral and wheelchair accessible bathroom. The bathroom has handrails and assistance chords. The door on the left leads to the Reading Room\, which is wide enough for a manual wheelchair. \nAll our bathrooms are gender neutral. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about the works of Shakespeare\, develop your performance skills and meet new friends. The workshop runs from 10am – 4pm (including the final performance and a break for lunch) and are £25 each. You can sign up for just 1 or all 3!

SUMMARY:‘Section 28 and Me’ Tea Party with Tom Marshman
DESCRIPTION:Bristol based artist Tom Marshman is gathering communities to explore the impact of Section 28 legislation introduced by Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government. Tom will host a series of tea parties with Gloucestershire Heritage Hub\, Strike a Light\, Voices Gloucester\, Trinity\, Bricks and Metal Peterborough\, to discuss the impact of Section 28 on the LGBTQIA+ community. \n  \nWhen reflecting on this decade Tom asks ‘I wonder if growing up within the decade in which queer life was silenced has made me a bit of a show off\, compelled to share queer or LGBTQI+ stories?’ \n  \nThe tea parties are a place for communities to meet and share their stories over tea and cake. You could have lived through this time or be curious to know more\, everyone is welcome. Tom will perform short performances connected to the topic to provoke conversation\, providing starting points for discussion with his own cabaret flair. \n  \nTom has observed many other peoples strong reactions to this legislation\, further explaining that ‘emotions are running high\, particularly at this moment when a repeat of similar legislation feels possible\, returning to the silencing of queerness in this country’. \n  \nThese tea parties are research for a new show\, supported by Unlimited & Bristol Ideas and part of Bristol 650. With permission\, participants’ responses will feed into this new work\, as an important and valuable part of the process.
