SUMMARY:‘Section 28 and Me’ Tea Party with Tom Marshman
DESCRIPTION:Bristol based artist Tom Marshman is gathering communities to explore the impact of Section 28 legislation introduced by Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government. Tom will host a series of tea parties with Gloucestershire Heritage Hub\, Strike a Light\, Voices Gloucester\, Trinity\, Bricks and Metal Peterborough\, to discuss the impact of Section 28 on the LGBTQIA+ community. \n  \nWhen reflecting on this decade Tom asks ‘I wonder if growing up within the decade in which queer life was silenced has made me a bit of a show off\, compelled to share queer or LGBTQI+ stories?’ \n  \nThe tea parties are a place for communities to meet and share their stories over tea and cake. You could have lived through this time or be curious to know more\, everyone is welcome. Tom will perform short performances connected to the topic to provoke conversation\, providing starting points for discussion with his own cabaret flair. \n  \nTom has observed many other peoples strong reactions to this legislation\, further explaining that ‘emotions are running high\, particularly at this moment when a repeat of similar legislation feels possible\, returning to the silencing of queerness in this country’. \n  \nThese tea parties are research for a new show\, supported by Unlimited & Bristol Ideas and part of Bristol 650. With permission\, participants’ responses will feed into this new work\, as an important and valuable part of the process. A work in progress of the work will be presented in November at the Wardrobe Theatre. \n  \nBooking is essential\, click here for more details.  \nPhoto credit: Mark Gray

SUMMARY:Malchamech album launch with Pete Smyth
DESCRIPTION:Malchamech are a “power trio for the 21st century” from Liverpool and Manchester. They’re releasing their new record from the building they rehearse in\, Metal – located inside the buildings at Platform 1 of Edge Hill train station. In support will be Pete Smyth performing a solo set. The event is free but donations are welcome. Consider this a practice space concert unlike many others! \nForming part of the ‘Music Improvisers’ group that uses Metal’s building at Platform 1 as a practice space\, Malchamech consists of Richard Harding on chapman stick\, Phil Hargreaves on flutes and saxophones\, and Richard Harrison on drums and percussion. Their sound is a “swirling maelstrom” of jazz-metal\, appropriate for our church-like Engine Room performance venue. If you enjoy music that’s unpredictable\, distorted\, and verging on a churning curdle of styles and approaches\, then this is for you. \nYou may recognise Pete Smyth from his contributions to Liverpool musical luminaries such as Kling Klang\, Mugstar\, and Clinic. In a solo capacity Pete recently opened up for stalwart of the live touring circuit\, Richard Dawson. \nPay a visit to Metal Liverpool – Platform 1 at Edge Hill station – from 7:30pm on Friday 28th July to catch a glimpse of the experimental music scene in a far from traditional setting. \nReserve your spot by visiting the advance ticket link here. \n

SUMMARY:The Waiting Room - Exhibition by Estuary Writers
DESCRIPTION:As part of this year’s Leigh Art Trail\, we commissioned local writers group Estuary Writers to take over the waiting room on Platform One at Leigh-on-Sea train station.   \nEstuary Writers were given the brief ‘The Waiting Room’ in April 2023\, with a 100-word limit and open genre. They visited the site together to find inspiration within its walls\, and then worked on pieces across Spring\, sharing with each other and editing over eight weeks. The end result is a collection of thirteen themed pieces spanning poetry\, flash fiction and personal reflections. \nIncluded in the Waiting Room Exhibition are 12 x Printed Works 1 x Printed Panel and a free zine containing the full collection of written works. Audio recordings of the written pieces are currently hosted on Metal’s Listening Bench\, on the decking at Metal’s HQ Chalkwell Hall\, Leigh Art Trail Venue 1.  \nBe sure to come and visit the exhibition and listening bench and explore the full trail from Saturday 8 – Sunday 16 July. \nEstuary Writers was formed in 2018 after a successful group writer’s LAB at Metal during the Essex Writers House programme within the Essex Book Festival month. Two of the writers\, Maria Solecki and Kelly Buckley\, wanted to keep the momentum going\, and set up a regular writing group\, Estuary Writers. The group is now hosted by Maria Solecki and Jo Overfield\, meeting bi-monthly at Metal Southend\, and offers a supportive space to create\, connect and share. It welcomes writers of any level and genre and can be found on Instagram & Twitter @estuarywriters – please follow for upcoming events.

A recurring subject in his work is Essex and the Thames Estuary. His Guardian longread ‘The Invention of Essex’ was published to widespread acclaim. He lives in Southend-on-Sea\, Essex.  \nTim joined Metal as a Writer in Residence during Essex Writers House 2021.  \nThis month marks the release of The Invention of Essex\, published by Profile Books. Deeply researched and thoroughly engaging\, The Invention of Essex shows that there is more to this fabled English county than meets the eye. A Financial Times ‘Book to Read in 2023’\n  \nElsa James \nElsa James is a British African-Caribbean conceptual artist and activist living in Essex since 1999. She works across live performance\, film (in which she also performs)\, text in digital formats and silkscreen prints on paper\, spoken word poetry\, and\, more recently\, large-scale neon text and sound. Since 2018 she has pursued an incisive exploration into the historical\, temporal and spatial dimensions of what it means to be Black in Essex—building critically on Gillian Darley’s assertion of Essex as ‘England’s most misunderstood county’. Her current artistic research —shifting away from Essex as a location and subject matter—focuses on the British Empire and the profundity of transatlantic slavery\, diaspora and belonging\, which she draws from the influential 2018 speech by the MP David Lammy in response to the Windrush scandal.  \nIn 2021\, she was a finalist for the prestigious Freelands Award with Focal Point Gallery and\, this year\, a nominated recipient of the Henry Moore Foundation Artists Award. Her work is held in private and public collections\, including the Government Art Collection and Beecroft Art Gallery\, for which she became the first female Black British artist to be acquired into the gallery’s permanent collection. In 2022\, she was named one of the 50 Most Influential People in Essex.  \nIn 2020\, Elsa James joined Metal as a Remote Artist in Residence.  \nElsa’s recent project\, Forgotten Black Essex\, led to the install of two new Blue Plaques in Essex which mark Hester Woodley and Princess Dinubolu. These are the first Blue Plaques which celebrate historic women of colour in the county.\n  \nSyd Moore \nSyd Moore is currently the first Author in Residence for Essex Libraries.   \nBest known for her Essex Witch Museum Mysteries (Strange Magic\, Strange Sight\, Strange Fascination\, Strange Tombs\, Strange Tricks) which were shortlisted for the Good Reader Holmes and Watson Award 2018 she has also written short stories – The Twelve Strange Days of Christmas (2019) and The Twelve Even Stranger Days of Christmas (2020) both of which were shortlisted for the prestigious ‘dagger awards’ by the Crime Writers Association. Harper Collins have published two standalone novels\, The Drowning Pool and Witch Hunt which became a bestseller. The first book in a new series\, Section W\, will be published by Oneworld in May 2021.   \nIn 2019 Moore became a Royal Literary Fund Fellow. For nine years prior to writing she was a lecturer and worked extensively in the publishing industry. In the 90s she presented Channel 4’s book programme\, Pulp. She is the founder of The Essex Girls Liberation Front and\, in 2020\, was successful in campaigning to have the derogatory definition of the ‘Essex Girl’ removed from the Oxford Learner’s Dictionary.\n  \nJohn Tarrow \nJohn Tarrow is a storyteller\, poet\, shaman\, award-winning author and creator of Britain’s most extraordinary home; Talliston House & Gardens. Talliston was a 25-year project that took the UK’s most ordinary house and transformed it\, room by room\, by ordinary people on an ordinary budget\, into Britain’s Most Extraordinary Home.  \nStarting as a three-bedroomed\, semi-detached\, ex-council house in Essex\, today not a single square centimetre of the original house remains. In its place is an extraordinary labyrinth of locations\, each set in different times and places.  \nTalliston is a once ordinary house and gardens in Essex where its thirteen rooms have been transformed into extraordinary locations each set in a different time and place. Magnolia living rooms have been recreated as Welsh watchtowers. Garages as log cabins in the woods. Box-rooms as 1920s investigator offices. A former pink bedroom is now a dark and haunted Scottish chamber. Talliston – a name that means ‘the hidden place in the wood’ – in the medieval market town of Great Dunmow\, just minutes from Stansted airport\, is another world hiding on a perfectly normal street\, inviting you to step inside and discover its secrets.

SUMMARY:A launch celebration of 'Little Estuaries': Essex Writers House
DESCRIPTION:Book here to join \n  \nJoin us at Chalkwell Hall for the Southend launch of Daniel Kramb’s new book of poetry — Little Estuaries\, published by the brand new UK imprint of Amsterdam’s HetMoet\, HetMoet-Menard\, and featuring cover art by Louisa Albani. \n“Gloriously spare and strange and compendious and tender\, like a hymn.” — Sara Baume\, author of Seven Steeples \nIn Little Estuaries\, Daniel Kramb goes in search of what’s fleeting between the shores. Amid a constantly shifting sense of what can be seen\, sensed or experienced\, the poet probes the estuary as sphere: an opening up\, a possibility.  \nWhittled down\, like sea to stream\, his poems emerge\, in their own distinct form\, estuary-shaped on the page. Intricate\, at times playful\, always open\, these unassuming\, small pieces reach beyond the confines\, always returning to what’s undeniable\, as the body.  \nSilt-smeared and salty\, this is poetry not on landscape\, but through it: formed not by what exists\, but from what’s washed up within.\n  \n“What emerges\, through and around these gentle and effective poems is a different sense of the estuary\, a place of quiet and shifting landscapes\, from the experience of walking out\, then letting go.” — Rachel Lichtenstein\, author of Estuary\n  \nAbout Daniel  \nDaniel Kramb is a writer and poet. He is a member of Malika’s Poetry Kitchen and his prose history of the collective is out in Too Young\, Too Loud\, Too Different (2021). Other work has appeared in The London Magazine\, Prototype\, Popshot and elsewhere. His fiction includes Central (2015) and From Here (2012). Look at Us is a stage collaboration with JJ Bola. Several Little Estuaries make up a poetry intervention at Thameside Nature Reserve commissioned for SEEPARK (South Essex Estuary Park) by URBAN landscape architects and arts organisation Metal Southend. SUMMARY:Words In Chalk: Essex Writers House
DESCRIPTION:A lively and popular spoken word poetry event which brings together an eclectic line-up of writers and performers from Essex and beyond. Come along and see who takes the stage at this Essex Writers House special\, hosted by Southend born and bred poet Hollie Dee and headlined by Hazel Mehmet and Bethany Down. With many more acts raring to go… \nAbout the poets  \nHazel Mehmet \nHazel Mehmet has been using their voice to speak on all things political\, all things parenting\, and all things queer\, since October 2019. They have headlined a number of incredible UK shows\, such as The Big Queer Poetry Show\, BYOB\, Trouble Tongues\, Big Trouble Poetry\, Brixton Says and Moetry\, and have been interviewed for several radio shows. SUMMARY:One Side Only: Essex Writers House
DESCRIPTION:One Side Only: From then to now\, Southend’s alternative press \nBook a free ticket here!  \nIf you’re interested in making your own publication\, collaborating with other local creatives or digging into Southend’s history of DIY culture\, this is the night for you!   \n  \nWe’ll start in the 70s.  \n \nArtist/writer Graham Burnett will share an insight to the underground press and DIY culture of Southend\, as captured in his new book. Southend on Zine explores 50 years of Southend’s counterculture\, as told through fanzines\, people’s papers and community magazines made in the town between 1971 and 2021.   \n  \nFast forward to 2023.   \nMeet Jemma Harwood\, who will introduce us Eye Junk Zine. Jemma curates and distributes this brilliant collaborative art zine every other month\, as well as spotlighting local events and hosting a regular call-out for new work. Pick up Issue04 and find out how to submit your own work for the next issue!  \n  \nReach across time and make your own broadside!\n \nWith materials supplied on the night (and anything you might like to bring along)\, we invite you to draw on inspiration from Graham and Jemma’s short talks and publications to make your very own broadside. Broadsides were one of the most common forms of printed materials between the 16th and 19th century. Often sold at public executions\, used to share song lyrics\, or designed to be folded into pamphlets\, a traditional broadside might have been used as a type of souvenir\, a temporary artwork or a cheap way of sharing and spreading information.   \nWhether you use monoprinting\, the written word\, collage or origami\, we invite you to try something new\, put your thoughts to paper\, explore the punk side of writing and connect with fellow writers and artists of Southend and beyond!  \n \n
