SUMMARY:A launch celebration of 'Little Estuaries': Essex Writers House
DESCRIPTION:Book here to join \n  \nJoin us at Chalkwell Hall for the Southend launch of Daniel Kramb’s new book of poetry — Little Estuaries\, published by the brand new UK imprint of Amsterdam’s HetMoet\, HetMoet-Menard\, and featuring cover art by Louisa Albani. \n“Gloriously spare and strange and compendious and tender\, like a hymn.” — Sara Baume\, author of Seven Steeples \nIn Little Estuaries\, Daniel Kramb goes in search of what’s fleeting between the shores. Amid a constantly shifting sense of what can be seen\, sensed or experienced\, the poet probes the estuary as sphere: an opening up\, a possibility.  \nWhittled down\, like sea to stream\, his poems emerge\, in their own distinct form\, estuary-shaped on the page. Intricate\, at times playful\, always open\, these unassuming\, small pieces reach beyond the confines\, always returning to what’s undeniable\, as the body.  \nSilt-smeared and salty\, this is poetry not on landscape\, but through it: formed not by what exists\, but from what’s washed up within.\n  \n“What emerges\, through and around these gentle and effective poems is a different sense of the estuary\, a place of quiet and shifting landscapes\, from the experience of walking out\, then letting go.” — Rachel Lichtenstein\, author of Estuary\n  \nAbout Daniel  \nDaniel Kramb is a writer and poet. He is a member of Malika’s Poetry Kitchen and his prose history of the collective is out in Too Young\, Too Loud\, Too Different (2021). Other work has appeared in The London Magazine\, Prototype\, Popshot and elsewhere. His fiction includes Central (2015) and From Here (2012). Look at Us is a stage collaboration with JJ Bola. Several Little Estuaries make up a poetry intervention at Thameside Nature Reserve commissioned for SEEPARK (South Essex Estuary Park) by URBAN landscape architects and arts organisation Metal Southend. Night bird press pamphlets are stocked at London Review Bookshop\, Poetry Pharmacy (Shropshire Hills)\, Seven Fables (Exmoor)\, Charleston bookshop (Lewes)\, Treadwells Bookshop\, Tate Britain Bookshop\, Much Ado Bookshop (Alfriston\, East Sussex)\, Kim’s Bookshops (Arundel & Chichester)\, Boekhandel Livius de Zevensprong\, Tilburg\, The Netherlands. nightbirdpress.com

SUMMARY:One Side Only: Essex Writers House
DESCRIPTION:One Side Only: From then to now\, Southend’s alternative press \nBook a free ticket here!  \nIf you’re interested in making your own publication\, collaborating with other local creatives or digging into Southend’s history of DIY culture\, this is the night for you!   \n  \nWe’ll start in the 70s.  \n \nArtist/writer Graham Burnett will share an insight to the underground press and DIY culture of Southend\, as captured in his new book. Southend on Zine explores 50 years of Southend’s counterculture\, as told through fanzines\, people’s papers and community magazines made in the town between 1971 and 2021.   \n  \nFast forward to 2023.   \nMeet Jemma Harwood\, who will introduce us Eye Junk Zine. Jemma curates and distributes this brilliant collaborative art zine every other month\, as well as spotlighting local events and hosting a regular call-out for new work. Pick up Issue04 and find out how to submit your own work for the next issue!  \n  \nReach across time and make your own broadside!\n \nWith materials supplied on the night (and anything you might like to bring along)\, we invite you to draw on inspiration from Graham and Jemma’s short talks and publications to make your very own broadside. Broadsides were one of the most common forms of printed materials between the 16th and 19th century. Often sold at public executions\, used to share song lyrics\, or designed to be folded into pamphlets\, a traditional broadside might have been used as a type of souvenir\, a temporary artwork or a cheap way of sharing and spreading information.   \nWhether you use monoprinting\, the written word\, collage or origami\, we invite you to try something new\, put your thoughts to paper\, explore the punk side of writing and connect with fellow writers and artists of Southend and beyond!  \n \n

SUMMARY:Simon Says/Dadda: Film screening
DESCRIPTION:Simon Says/Dadda is a collaborative three-screen film exploring father/daughter relationships together with Black and Asian women and non-binary individuals from four host cities across the UK (Liverpool\, Birmingham\, Newcastle and London). The ambitious largescale film project was developed during a Metal residency and highlights the deep impact that structural inequalities have within wider society.  \nThe screening will take place at FACT\,  Liverpool on Wednesday 7 June at 7pm. This is a pay what you can screening (suggested donation £3). Book your ticket \nThrough a series of Gatherings hosted by Beverley at four UK socially engaged arts spaces (Metal\, Liverpool\, Grand Union\, Birmingham\, Lux\, London and Newbridge\, Newcastle)\, Beverley guided women and non-binary individuals through a therapeutic process\, supported by a mental health practitioner\, to explore their own family relationships and experiences of patriarchy. The workshops involved looking at film\, listening to music\, drawing\, writing poetry and cooking together.  \nThe three screens feature footage shot by Beverley supported by family\, actors and a film crew\, and a series of audio testimonies gifted by the project participants. \nTrigger warnings: Family relationships\, grief\, family planning\, abuse.  \nAbout Beverley \nBeverley Bennett is an artist-filmmaker whose work revolves around the possibilities of drawing\, performance and collaboration. Her practice connects multiple ways of making. The first of these is a concern with the importance of ‘gatherings’ to denote a methodology that differs from the more hierarchical model of the workshop; one person leading and sharing information with participants taking part in the activities. Instead ‘gatherings’ are cyclical\, whereby everyone learns from each other and often formulate in myriad ways\, from reading together to gathering at a party. This has created a ‘tapestry of voices’\, an interweaving of communalities and differences that provide a broader view\, an important part of amplifying intergenerational relationships. \nThe second is an investigation of the idea of The Archive (often beginning projects by creating / adding to her own extensive personal archives of interviews\, using them for preliminary research and experimentation) and the third is collaboration. This is frequently through socially political work with other creatives\, fine artists\, community members\, young children and their families. Her practice provides spaces for participants to become collaborators and provides a point of focus from where to unpick ideas around what constitutes an art practice and for whom art is generated.  \nBennett’s work has been shown nationally and internationally; venues include the British Film Institute (BFI)\, London (2023); Birmingham 2022 Festival (2022); CinemaAfrica Film Festival\, Stockholm (2018); Encounters Short Film Festival\, Bristol (2017); Wysing Art Centre\, Cambridgeshire (2017); Spike Island\, Bristol (2017); New Art Exchange\, Nottingham (2016); National Gallery of Jamaica\, Kingston (2016); Bluecoat\, Liverpool (2010).  \nBook your ticket

SUMMARY:RLF Reading Round with Syd Moore: Essex Writers House
DESCRIPTION:Book a free place here! \nRLF Reading Round is a unique network of reading groups\, each run by a published author. The group leaders\, or ‘Lectors’\, may be playwrights\, poets\, writers of fiction or non-fiction: all are able to offer a unique ‘insider’s’ perspective’ on the texts under discussion.   \nFor almost 2 years\, Metal have hosted a regular group led by acclaimed novelist and short-story writer Syd Moore.  \nTo mark Essex Writers House\, a programme which Syd was instrumental in developing\, we are excited to offer a limited number of spaces to join her Reading Round for the evening.   \nWhat to expect from the Reading Round\nThere’s no reading to be done either before or after the sessions. Instead\, each week the group listens to different pieces of writing that the Lector reads out loud. The selected writing might be a short story\, poem\, speech\, memoir or piece of narrative non-fiction. The pieces are then discussed at some length to get under the skin of the text: What effects does it have on us as we read? How does it achieve those effects? Guided by the lector\, participants consider the text in detail\, looking at tone\, choice of words\, viewpoint\, the effect of a certain image or turn of phrase\, and so on. \nGroups are run loosely along the lines of practical criticism\, whereby readers are encouraged to respond afresh to the words on the page in front of them\, rather than relying on preconceived ideas about a text. All that is required of participants is a willingness to listen\, discuss and be open to new ideas. For many participants\, the group provides a valuable opportunity to meet with other book-lovers in a friendly\, stimulating and relaxed environment.  \n  \nAbout Syd Moore\nSyd Moore is an acclaimed novelist and short-story writer whose work focusses on the historic witch hunts in Essex. Her first book\, The Drowning Pool (HarperCollins\, 2011) looked at the legend of Sarah Moore\, a notorious sea witch\, in Moore’s home town of Leigh-on-Sea. The bestselling Witch Hunt (HarperCollins\, 2012) investigated the hysteria of 1645–47 inflamed by the notorious Witchfinder General. Moore continues to explore the witch hunts of Essex in her current series The Essex Witch Museum Mysteries (Strange Magic\, Strange Sight\, Strange Fascination\, Strange Tombs) published by OneWorld. The Strange Days of Christmas (OneWorld\, 2019) is her first short-story collection. \nPrior to writing\, Syd Moore was a lecturer\, worked extensively in the publishing industry and presented Channel 4’s book programme\, Pulp. She was the founding editor of Level 4\, an arts and culture magazine\, and co-creator of Superstrumps\, the game that reclaims female stereotypes. In 2017 she founded the Essex Girls Liberation Front to challenge and reposition the stereotype of the Essex Girl. She was also appointed UK ambassador for the Danish charity\, DINNødhjælp\, which helps Nigerian ‘witch’ children. In 2018 she was selected to be the writer in residence for the Essex Book Festival and began an on-going campaign for an Essex Writers House. Her debut screenplay\, Witch West\, has been optioned by Hidden Door Productions.  \nSyd Moore has been shortlisted for the Dead Good Reader awards. She lives in Essex where her books are set.  \nFind out more about the Royal Literary Fund here.

SUMMARY:EARTH II - film\, food and Q&A at Edge Hill station
DESCRIPTION:Metal Liverpool welcomes you to a screening of new movie EARTH II accompanied by food\, music\, and a post-film Q&A. \n‘Earth II’ is a found footage action/comedy/documentary film about climate change\, Mars colonisation\, & human extinction pieced together from hundreds of Hollywood films. \nThis event was originally scheduled for November 2022\, but sadly had to be postponed. It was worth the wait though as we’re pleased to say that this time\, we’ll be joined by one of the Directors for a post-film discussion! \nPlot synopsis: \n“Earth\, present day. With human civilization facing ever-worsening climate calamities\, the captains of industry set their sights on a new planet. Soon\, a secret public-private partnership is selling tickets to Mars at a premium out of reach for the majority of the population\, for whom the choice is either indentured servitude in the new offworld colony or perishing in the coming cataclysm. When the world’s governments decide to speed things up by declaring war on Earth and the rabble they’re leaving behind\, the planet forges a strategic alliance with an unlikely partner: an underground luddite movement. Some will join the uprising\, others will become fanatical defenders of entrenched power structures\, while yet others will do everything in their power to continue living exactly the same way they always have. \nIts star-studded cast and astronomical production values — painstakingly purloined from some of the biggest blockbusters of the past three decades — make Earth II the most expensive climate disaster epic to be produced for no money.” \n  \nRunning time is 97min. Recommended for ages 12 and above. \nThe film will start at 7pm\, with our doors open from 6pm. \nFood will be provided by Raggas and is included in the price of your ticket (suggested donation of £3 please). The event will finish at around 9pm including the post-movie discussion. \nMetal will have hot and cold drinks available for free\, with donations welcome. Popcorn TBC! \nThe film will be followed by a live Q&A with a representative from the Anti-Banality Union. \n  \nTickets: earthii.eventbrite.co.uk \n  \nWatch the trailer for EARTH II below: \n \n  \nAbout the directors: \nThe Anti-Banality Union is a collective who re-cut Hollywood blockbusters into new feature-length films. Their work has been screened at Spectacle Theater\, Anthology Film Archives\, Maysles Documentary Center\, and several undisclosed squats & communes. \n  \nStills from the film plus the EARTH II poster below: \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n \n  \nRead press coverage here: \nhttps://www.portlandmercury.com/movies-and-tv/2022/09/23/46090956/earth-ii-is-four-decades-of-disaster-movies-recut-into-climate-change-reality \nhttps://www.hellgatenyc.com/anti-banality-union-earth-ii/ \nhttps://brooklynrail.org/2022/02/film/Anti-Banality-Union-with-Andreas-Petrossiants \nhttps://www.screenslate.com/articles/earth-ii \nhttps://hardcrackers.com/review-of-earth-ii/ \n  \nJoin us on Thursday 18 May from 6pm! SUMMARY:Long Table Discussion: Cost of Living Crisis with Dora Colquhoun
DESCRIPTION:Join Liverpool based theatre maker and artist Dora Colquhoun for a participatory event discussing the cost of living crisis. The conversation will be organised in the long table format\, created by performance artist Lois Weaver\, which aims to make sure everyone who joins is able to be heard and can participate when they want to. \nWhat will happen? \nA simple format of a table 12 chairs and the subject of the cost of living will be up for discussion. The aim of the format is to enable discussion where no one is the ‘expert’ it is a non hierarchical space. There will be an opportunity to join in if you feel inclined. The event will be audio recorded. \nThe event is supported by ourselves and Project Phakama. \nSchedule \n12pm: Soup\, refreshments and spoken word. Please come along prior for free soup. \n1pm: Long table discussion about the cost-of-living crisis 90 minutes. \n2.30: Refreshments cake debrief and music \n4pm: End \nVenue \nUllet Road Unitarian Church \n57 Ullet Rd\, \nLiverpool \nL17 2AA \nAccessibility \nStep free access to the Unitarian Church is available\, please inform us in advance if you require a member of staff to meet you once you enter the grounds. There is also an accessible toilet. \nThe event will have a BSL interpretor. \nWe will also facilitate a quiet space. \nBook free tickets here.

SUMMARY:Who inspires you and why?
DESCRIPTION:Come along and celebrate inspiring women this International Women’s Day through tufting art workshops with punch needling and Rag Rugging. \nWhen? \n\nSaturday 4 March at Town Hall on Bridge Street 12-3pm (Free\, Drop-in) \n\nTogether with artist Rose Croft\, we are running a tufting workshop with punch needle and Rag Rugging art at the International Women’s Day Celebration’s at Peterborough Town Hall (4 March)\, exploring the theme of influential women\, and the reasons why they inspire you! \nPunch needle art is a form of embroidery suitable for all skill levels\, using a large needle like tool to punch loops of yarn through fabric. It is a fast process which allows you to make mistakes and experiment with different designs and textures. Rag Rugging is a craft where people use recycled fabrics and clothes to create rugs. By prodding and poking strips of fabric through linen.   \nArtist Rose Croft will be teaching you the basics of both these techniques whilst making your own punch needle design to work with and contribute to a collective piece of tufted art. Rose will guide you through the process\, of selecting the right materials\, practicing the technique\, working with colours\, creating a design\, and then making a piece of art that you can be proud of.  \nDuring the session we will be having a chat about who inspires you and why\, these discussions will help inform designs inspired by those women and conversations\, whilst also feeding into a larger collaborative piece of textile art!  \n \nAbout Rose Croft Rose is an artist and storyteller and based in Spalding and Peterborough. Rose works to engage people with art\, story and nature in ways that forge lifelong connections. Through her creative work Rose aims to capture and share the simple joy within us\, brought out by the world we live in by using colour and focusing on the process of making and doing.

SUMMARY:Artist Sharing: Charlie Barlow
DESCRIPTION:Come join local artist Charlie Barlow on Wednesday 15 February from 5pm\, for her sharing and discussion of new work\, ‘Now and Yesterday’.   \nCharlie has created textile works using materials of the mass media – everyday newspapers and digital phone notifications. She’s been exploring ways in which constant flows of information are presented\, experienced and absorbed by the mind. The works range from large double sheet spreads to a hand-held scale\, and each piece is weaved by hand into patterns as once clear imagery becomes distorted in complex layers.  \nThis is a work in progress sharing and\, Charlie is keen to gain feedback from those who attend as to develop the work further. \nBook here.

SUMMARY:Future Station: Rest (Is A Political Act)
DESCRIPTION:For our next Future Station event we are pleased to welcome artist Niki Colclough to host a workshop to explore the value of rest\, linking to our wider theme of Care in the Arts. \nRest (Is A Political Act) is a workshop in a series created by Niki Colclough. Join us to speculate on new strategies for re-framing and re-prioritising rest in a society orientated towards productivity.  \nIn an act of collective care we will explore alternative understandings of and approaches to work\, reframe laziness as a creative tool and contemplate societal/political structures of wellbeing.  \nNiki will share her research in progress alongside a bespoke tool designed to introduce the 7 types of rest\, together we will consider the types of rest we might need before dreaming up joint strategies for implementation.  \nThe event is designed for those working precariously in the creative industries who would like to work towards more joy and sustainability in their working practices. This is a relaxed and interactive session where contributions and thoughts on the topic are welcomed.  \nBook your free tickets here.
