Now I’m in my 30s\, when my dad visits me in the UK\, the first meal he makes is still dumplings.” \nAs we say goodbye to Chauffeurs Cottage\, join Metal Peterborough and artist collective Hidden Keileon as we stir ingredients\, wrap up memories we create at reunions\, and dream about possibilities that arise in chaos. \nPart workshop part dinner\, learn how to make your own dumplings\, complete with tasty fillings\, over conversations about reimaging spaces and their possibilities. \nThis session is part of ‘What’s Possible When Things Go Wrong’\, a series of celebrations\, sharings\, and dinners to mark our final moments in the building and to explore what is possible when the sh*t hits the fan. \nBook free tickets here. \nAbout Hidden Keileon\nHidden Keileon is an artist collective collaborating with migrant and queer people to imagine futures with justice and freedom for all\, by dreaming up and leading multidisciplinary\, life-affirming cultural projects. \nWhat’s Possible When Things Go Wrong\nMetal and the other organisations based at Chauffeurs Cottage will be leaving in December. It wasn’t our decision and it’s one we’re still trying to get our heads around\, but we’re working hard to find a new space in the city that will be just as wonderful\, whilst celebrating all the magical moments we’ve spent here. \nBeing thrown into this situation has made us reflect on ‘necessity as a mother of invention’ – being faced with a challenging situation and being inspired to create a new imaginative solution. It’s made us dream about inspiring futures and what a queer\, accessible\, anti-racist space would look like from scratch.

DESCRIPTION:For one night only\, join Cine-Sister for a film screening of The Gleaners and I by Agnès Varda at Chauffeurs Cottage\, as part of our What’s Possible When Things Go Wrong programme. A series of celebrations\, sharings\, and dinners to mark our final moments in the building and to explore what is possible when the sh*t hits the fan. \nThe Gleaners and I (2000) is a poetic and deeply personal documentary that explores themes of waste\, resourcefulness\, and the overlooked lives of those who make use of society’s excess. Directed by French filmmaker Agnès Varda\, the film blends observational footage with intimate\, reflective narration as Varda sets out to document the practice of “gleaning” — the age-old act of collecting leftover crops from fields after harvest — and expands this concept to urban settings\, where people salvage food\, objects\, and materials discarded by others. The gleaners’ resourcefulness and resilience highlight how circumstances\, especially scarcity or social need\, drive creativity and new approaches to survival. The Gleaners and I is a portrait of people and a filmmaker embracing necessity as a catalyst for invention and creativity. \nBook your free tickets here. \nAbout Cine-Sister\nFounded in 2016 by Emily Steele\, Cine-Sister launched with its first screening in March 2017. Cine-Sister has since 2017 run 50+ successful events\, reaching 6000+ audiences. Assistant professor at C-Dare (centre for dance research at Coventry University). DESCRIPTION:Artists Emma Edmondson and Shaun C Badham are coming to Chauffeurs for an evening of activity exploring the theme of land ownership\, agency and what’s possible when things go wrong. The event will include talks around artists’ agency\, protest postcard writing\, hearty root vegetable stew and a quiz titled Who Owns the Land? Prizes included. \nThis session is part of What’s Possible When Things Go Wrong\, a series of celebrations\, sharings\, and dinners to mark our final moments in the building and to explore what is possible when the sh*t hits the fan. \nBook your free tickets here. \nAbout Emma Edmondson\nStudying and graduating during the 2008 financial crash alternative economies and utopian community are at the centre of Emma Edmondson’s practice. Through sculpture\, print\, sound and text\, she explores the power of people coming together through creative projects to change systems and rules. Recently she has been processing raw clay dug from the ground and exploring local land rights to create sculptures that sit on the ground they were made from. Through this she wants to start conversations about agency\, land ownership and our connections as humans to the land we live on. \nIn 2016 she set up TOMA an accessible artist-run education model which is currently the only postgrad-ish level art programme in Essex after all others were stopped by their host universities. TOMA sits outside the traditional institutional model and was born of and been shaped by austerity and the decades long businessification and dismantling of creative education. This\, alongside the rise of tuition fees\, means it is difficult for artists to flourish unless they become part of the financialised art world. These are the politics that bought TOMA into existence. \nAbout Shaun C Badham\nShaun produces installations and objects that draw out our relationship to exterior spaces and structures from the urban to the edgelands. These projects offer a use value\, with how the works are occupied\, determined or engaged with. The operative element plays out durationally\, whether that’s changing policy on how a local council regenerate play spaces or how a city grants permission for a touring public sculpture. \nShaun has instigated long-term collaborative projects that are realised across different mediums\, from local community actions to large-scale sculptural installations. Notable projects include\, I’M STAYING (2014 to 2021)\, MORNING (2014 to 2018) and PLOT (2018 to 2024)\, MARKING THE LAND (2022 to present) and EDGELANDS (2022 to present). Shaun is a co-director of Bas-Arts-Index. \nWhat’s Possible When Things Go Wrong\nMetal and the other organisations based at Chauffeurs Cottage will be leaving in December. DESCRIPTION:Join Syntax Poetry for a comeback of Write Club at Chauffeurs. Originally created by poets Mark Grist\, Charley Genever and Keely Mills back in 2016\, Write Club is best described as Fight Club-meets a pokemon battle-meets a poetry slam. \nIt’s a night of spoken word but there are three team captains\, each with an army of poets and just 20 minutes. They’ll be penning lines responding to the theme of ‘necessity as a mother of invention’. You\, as the audience\, decide which team is the winner. Expect a night of joy\, catharsis and thanks…oh\, and a little trash talk. \nBook your free tickets here. \nThis session is part of ‘What’s Possible When Things Go Wrong’ programme\, a series of celebrations\, sharings\, and dinners to mark our final moments in the building and to explore what is possible when the sh*t hits the fan. \nAbout Syntax Poetry Collective\nSyntax are a collective of Peterborough based poets who look after the Peterborough Poet Laureate campaign and aim to be the poetry lungs of the Peterborough poetry scene. They also run poetry events and projects like the Syntax Calendar. DESCRIPTION:Join the Desire Paths artists Kate Monson\, Laura Whiting and Liam Heatherson to explore Canvey Town Centre through a guided sensory walk. \nDesire Paths is part of ‘This is Us’ is a creative engagement programme led by Estuary Festival and Metal commissioned by Castle Point Borough Council inviting local residents to share experiences of living in the borough and aspirations for its future. \nLocal artists have been commissioned to develop creative activities that share diverse perspectives\, with creative activities both informing and illustrating the emerging Local Plan. \nMeeting at the Memorial Gardens in front of The Paddocks\, we will flow down Long Road and up Furtherwick Road\, seeping into side streets as we go. \nTravelling about 1.5km over a period of 2.5 hours\, the walk will include multiple pause points for creative engagement and contemplation. They’re one of London’s most-loved and likeable drag divas! Bringing sass and panache to any event with her stunning performances\, insane looks and big bag of pop tracks that has everything from Queen\, to Beyonce\, original raps\, to politically charged pieces and back again. Expect performances\, games\, and a catwalk or two! \nAnd what’s a party without some music? Providing us with the tracks to keep us dancing into the night is artist and DJ Byron Vincent. As Disco Neurotico’s resident DJ\, Byron Vincent has ignited dancefloors across the UK’s top venues and festivals. Expect riffs you recognise in remixes you don’t.
