Huge congratulations to artists Delaine le Bas and Jasleen Kaur who have been nominated for this year’s Turner Prize.
Delaine le Bas, nominated for Incipit Vita Nova. Here Begins The New Life/A New Life Is Beginning at Secession, Vienna, was a previous artist in residence at Metal Peterborough, developing her work To Gypsy Land in 2013. Delaine also contributed to our first In Other Words publication in 2020 which gathered urgent reflections from 49 artists exploring their hopes and fears for the future at a time of global crisis. See some of Delaine’s work from her 2013 residency with us below.
Jasleen Kaur, nominated for her solo exhibition Alter Altar at Tramway, Glasgow, worked with us as part of England’s Creative Coast. Commissioned by Cement Fields and launched to coincide with the opening weekend of Estuary 2021, Jasleen’s work The first thing I did was to kiss the ground was a work in two parts: a sculpture and a sound-piece that were sited close together right on the water’s edge. The sculpture was a large-scale semi-abstract form resembling a Sikh head that takes its inspiration from the decorative processional ‘Palki’ floats that feature in Sikh celebrations. Explore images of Jasleen’s work below.
We’re honoured to have had the privilege of working with both Delaine le Bas and Jasleen Kaur. Congratulations to both Delaine and Jasleen again, to the other nominees Pio Abad and Claudette Johnson. We’re looking forward to seeing the exhibitions and best of luck to all. Learn more about all the nominees and their work here.
The first thing I did was to kiss the ground was part of the England’s Creative Coast Waterfronts commissions. England’s Creative Coast was led by Turner Contemporary and Visit Kent, in partnership with Cement Fields, Creative Folkstone, Hastings Contemporary, De La Warr Pavilion, Metal Southend and Towner Eastbourne.
