A neighbourhood portrait through people, place and memories.

Smithdown Primary’s artist in residence programme engaged Year 5 pupils and their teachers to make art inspired by Tate’s national collection.

For two months, Liverpool based artist Victoria Opomu (artist in residence) has been working with children aged 9-10 years old in their classrooms to look at and respond to the art on display at Tate Liverpool. Artworks were used to inspire and inform different hands-on workshops and to share a range of skills with the pupils that were utilised in their own art making.

The children’s experiences of living and growing up in Smithdown Primary’s surrounding neighbourhoods of Toxteth, Edge Hill and Wavertree also informed their artworks, and together they found imaginative ways to explore and respond to the project themes:

    • Family and community

    • Local landscapes

    • Memory and identity

The artist in residence programme was supported by Metal in partnership with Tate Liverpool.

    About Vicki Opomu

As a multi-disciplinary artist and designer, Vicki Opomu creates abstract art that explores the intersection of form, texture, and colour. With a focus on relief printmaking, and laser cut blocks, Vicki employs traditional and innovative techniques to create striking compositions that are at once dynamic and meditative. Her work is informed by a deep appreciation for nature and the natural world and seeks to capture the essence of the organic in an abstract form. Through a process of experimentation and exploration, Vicki Opomu creates work that is both visually striking and emotionally resonant, inviting viewers to engage with the beauty and complexity of the world around them.
