Independents Biennial (@IndyBiennial) is a festival of contemporary art from Liverpool, Wirral, St Helens, Knowsley, Sefton & Halton. Running simultaneously with the Liverpool Biennial since its initiation in 1999, the Independents Biennial is currently organised by Art in Liverpool and aims to celebrate the region’s creative life and cast a fresh perspective on how people in Merseyside see, make and use art. The 2018 festival tackled issues close to the hearts of artists who live and work in the region and invited international artists to the city to share their take on the spaces we inhabit.
Metal will be lead development partners for Independents Biennial 2020. During the production of the festival Art In Liverpool will be hosted at Edge Hill Station, and we will also take on the role as Artist Liaison, working closely with Art In Liverpool to develop new paths for artists to engage. Independents Biennial and Metal will be announcing their artists in residence shortly.
About Art in Liverpool
Art in Liverpool was established in 2004, and has been a consistent voice in support of artists and galleries at all stages in their development. In 2018 they took over Independents Biennial to ensure it meets those goals and can foster developing talent while celebrating established artists and venues that have made and impact on local culture. In 2018 our focus was on the region and connecting dozens of venues to each other. In 2020 we hope to support collaboration and connections between artists who represent every corner of the region.
Patrick Kirk-Smith, Art in Liverpool editor says:
‘Art in Liverpool are delighted to have the support and partnership of Metal Liverpool in building Independents Biennial into a festival that truly represents the whole of the arts in Merseyside.’
