Positive Notes is a youth-led programme developing an art trail across Peterborough. The project spotlights the overlooked histories of underrepresented young people into the city’s streets.

The project aims to reframe perceptions of Peterborough and inspire local pride by celebrating stories of our LGBTQIA+, global majority, migrant, and refugee communities.
In collaboration with Culture Community and soon to be confirmed partners, Peterborough Museum, local LGBTQIA+ and global majority historians, and youth groups, participants will engage in workshops to explore stories that matter to them. For example, the country’s first school where English was everyone’s second language, the tale of a migrant philanthropic strongman, or the history of the Peterborough Campaign for Homosexual Equality.
These stories will be transformed into placemakers installed at various locations, using words that invite reflection and conversation, sparking dialogue and a deeper connection to Peterborough’s diverse cultural history.
Historically, Peterborough has been labelled as the ‘worst place to live’, – perceived as lacking a distinct identity. Racially motivated crimes have increased, exacerbated by a rise far right activity. Conversations with young people (1400+ since 2020) reveal this has led to diminished local pride and a sense of disconnection, many of whom feel that the city offers limited opportunities.
Positive Notes aims to shift these perceptions by encouraging a sense of pride, belonging, and connection to the city.
We are currently seeking a lead artist for Positive Notes, a brand-new project launching Spring 2025, all about uncovering the hidden gems of Peterborough’s history. We want to engage young people (13 – 25) to discover, celebrate, and share the stories that have been overlooked—stories of amazing people, places, and events that give Peterborough its unique vibe.
