After eight years at Metal Liverpool, Director Shaun Curtis is leaving to embark on a new role as Senior Curator Learning at Tate Liverpool. Metal will be welcoming Senior Project Manager, Jenny Porter to the role as Interim Director.
Shaun joined Metal in 2014, bringing a wealth of experience from working for different cultural organisations across the region. Working from the iconic buildings at Edge Hill Station, Shaun has propelled the programme, connecting local artists with international voices. During his time at Metal, Shaun led on many high quality projects including the much celebrated Different Trains concert at Edge Hill Railway Station with composer Steve Reich, London Contemporary Orchestra and filmmaker Bill Morrison. Over the past few years, Shaun’s interests have become increasingly focused on the environmental crisis and exploring the role of art and culture in addressing this. Shaun played an instrumental role for the sector, as the founder and chair of Shift Liverpool, a sustainability network for art organisations in the Liverpool City Region, working to reduce carbon emissions and the move away from environmentally damaging practices.
Shaun said “It’s been a genuinely fulfilling experience working with Metal over the past eight years and I will really miss the amazing colleagues, communities and artists I have had the pleasure of working with. I am also thrilled to hand the role over to Jenny Porter as Interim Director, someone who has such a rich history with the organisation.”
Jenny Porter has been part of the Metal Liverpool team since 2007, originally as an Administrator and currently working as a Senior Project Manager. Like Shaun, Jenny has supported many large-scale landmark projects such as the Liverpool Beach Huts along the Liverpool Waterfront in 2016, commissioning John Cooper Clarke for Liverpool Biennial in 2016 and curating the Liverpool Art Prize from 2010-2014. Jenny has strong cultural and regional links, and is a practising artist herself, producing paintings and illustrations. Jenny has a keen interest in socially engaged practice and film and looks forward to building on this interest in her new role at Metal.
Jenny said “I am delighted to step into this role in such a significant year for Metal. Having been with Metal when we first moved to Edge Hill Station in 2009, I am excited to continue to build on Metal’s commitment to the culture and creativity of our local neighbourhood.”
Metal’s Board takes this opportunity to wish Shaun all the best with his future endeavours and thank him for the spirit, creativity and commitment he has brought to the role.
The Board looks forward to supporting Jenny Porter in the next chapter of her journey as Metal Liverpool’s Interim Director and knows that she will have a positive and lasting impact on the organisation.
