Our new residency artists for 2023 are here! After carefully deliberating over lots of exciting applications and several cross-site conversations, we’re really pleased to welcome James Wilde, Fasiha Ashiq, Malika Speaks and Martha Cattell into residence with us in Peterborough, and Connor Turansky, Hannah Brailsford and Maddi Crease in Southend! The new artists-in-residence are spread across the country, with each artist joining us as the site they live/work locally to. Find out more about our new artists below and follow the link to their artist profile pages to learn more.
In Peterborough:
- James Wilde is a visual artist working with photography, installation and text. He intends to use this residency to explore topical questions of what a definable masculinity is.
- Fasiha Ashiq will be telling stories through illustration, painting and paper cutting. Fasiha is currently exploring the emotional and familial impact colonisation has had on identity.
- Malika Speaks is a spoken word artist who is passionate about using the power of writing and expression to help people grow more self-aware, improve wellbeing and confidence.
- Martha Cattell explores themes of environment haunting and archive, thinking specifically around landscape and nature through socially engaged methods. They are developing the work ‘The shrinking archive’, researching the Fens.
In Southend:
- Connor Turanksy is an Essex-based visual artists and educator, who creates interactive experiences, builds worlds and designs mechanical contraptions.
- Hannah Brailsford is a performance storyteller, actor and creative arts practitioner. Her solo work is inspired by the landscape, the folklore connected with it and the female gaze/identity in folk tale and myth.
- Maddi Crease is a poet and artists living and working in Southend. Both her poetry and visual arts frequently cover themes of mental health, neurodivergence and the body. In her residency, Maddi will begin research and production of a short poetry film, ‘Autistic Joy’, which will focus on the parts of being autistic that bring us joy and positive experiences.
