    Studio 459

    April 30, 2025 by

    We’re excited to be partnering with @Studio459Tomar for a new residency opportunity 2nd-16th July this year

    Studio 459 is a new co-living artist residency space, set in the beautiful, forested hills on the outskirts of Tomar (UNESCO world heritage site) in central Portugal. Hosted by partners Mark Richards and João Gravanita (and their dog Poppy!) on their small farm, it offers artists from all disciplines the opportunity to explore their practice and creativity in a new international rural context whilst sharing their domestic and studio environment with other creatives. It is a space for artists to live and work in proximity and engage in collaborative or solo research.

    This funded residency is a chance for 3 artists to spend two weeks at the studios in July to undertake research, experiment, slow down, immerse yourself in nature, explore a new culture, and hopefully be inspired.

    We would love to hear from artists who have a practice in Socially Engaged arts who are based in either Southend, Liverpool or Peterborough. The theme of this residency is Rest and Reconnection…allowing time for socially engaged artists to re-engage with their own practice

    We are looking to provide time for personal artistic practice – for example If you spend the majority of your time facilitating others or running workshops we want to provide you some time to develop personal exploration and creativity

    So if you have:

    • A desire to explore and experiment in a rural, international context
    • An emerging project requiring some concentrated focus and/or development support;
    • A wish to carve out some studio time for yourself to re-engage with your practice
    • The need for a break to breathe, walk, read and reflect with others;
    • A passion for landscape, gardening and the natural environment

    The residency includes accommodation, studio, prepared meals, utilities and trips. You will receive a £400 stipend towards travel and expenses, and you will be responsible for booking your own flights and return train journey from Lisbon to Tomar, where you will be collected from the station.

    Closing date for applying is Tuesday May 27th at 5pm .
