Hello! I’m Liz Smith. I’ve many years’ experience as a senior leader in the cultural sector. My background as a social historian and history teacher drives a strong curiosity and enjoyment in working together. I have a strong belief in the power of people and place to shape identity. Engaging with these stories helps communities connect across generations and gives us a meaningful way to make sense of the world and our place in it. Throughout my career, I’ve worked to find creative and innovative ways to involve young people and communities with heritage and the arts. I am more passionate than ever that these experiences can truly transform lives. National reach and community accountability are core values for me. I’ve initiated many national arts partnerships to promote equity and improve access to national collections. In my position as Director of Learning and Engagement at the National Portrait Gallery, recent work has included re-imagining the building, re-displaying the Collection, and designing programmes through co-creation—all with the central aim of making NPG more inclusive, representative, and relevant for everyone. I’m proud to join as a Trustee.
